It is not necessary to install this update prior to installing the new update, nor is it necessary to uninstall this update prior to installing the new update.

First, when attempting to use an Availability Policy to schedule Windows Azure nodes connected to a high availability head node, the nodes may not come online. The deployment may fail due to both head nodes attempting to start the Windows Azure nodes at the same time. This fix allows on the active head node to perform this action.

Second , when attempting to take active Windows Azure nodes offline, those nodes may get stuck in the 'draining' state. This may happen if the head node, or the server hosting the cluster's SQL database, is under high load when the operations are attempted. This fix makes the cluster more resiliant to time-out related issues.

Third, Windows Azure nodes may have entered the 'error' state due to an issue with the HPC diagnostics / monitoring service. In this case the node would not show up as online and available for use until it was rebooted. This fix resolves the problem with the diagnostic service blocking the node.
    • System Requirements
      Supported Operating System

      Windows HPC Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2

        An HPC Pack 2008 R2 / HPC Server 2008 R2 cluster
HPC Pack 2008 R2 Service Pack 4 must be installed
      • This hotfix need to be run on Head Nodes.
Note: Before applying this update, please stop all Windows Azure nodes.

To start the download, click the Download button next to the appropriate file (KBnnnnnnn-x64.exe for the 64-bit version, KBnnnnnnn-x86.exe for the 32-bit version) and then:
        1. Click Save to copy the download to your computer.
        2. Close any open HPC Cluster Manager or HPC Job Manager windows.
Note: Any open HPC Cluster Manager of HPC Job Managers may unexpectedly quit or show an error message during the update process if left open. This does not affect installation of the update.
        3. Run the download on the headnode using an administrator account. Note: If you have HA headnodes, run the fix on the Active node, move the node to Passive, and after failover occurs run the fix on the new Active node. Do this for all head nodes in the cluster.

Some updates may apply to more than one piece of HPC Pack software. In order to uninstall those updates, remove them in the following order:
        1. Update for HPC Pack 2008 R2 Services for Excel 2010
        2. Update for HPC Pack 2008 R2 Client Components
        3. Update for HPC Pack 2008 R2 Server Components
        4. Update for HPC Pack 2008 R2 MS-MPI Redistributable Pack
Note: If you don't follow the order, you might not be able to uninstall the QFE, as some QFE will have dependence across components

Note: If you have HA headnodes, uninstall the updates on a passive head node, move the node to Active, and then repeat uninstallation on the new passive head node. Do this for all head nodes in the cluster.
