The Hyper-V® server role in Windows Server® 2012 includes Hyper-V Replica, which provides the ability to perform asynchronous and frequent replication of virtual machines to another server running Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role installed. Because virtual machines can be quite large and servers can be connected over WANs or constrained network paths, a WAN optimization solution will provide substantial benefits in bandwidth reduction without requiring specialized configuration on the server or the devices. This document captures the results from the bandwidth optimization experiments conducted in the Microsoft® Engineering Excellence Center (EEC) lab by using the Riverbed Steelhead appliance WAN optimization devices with Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Replica. This is part of a larger validation exercise to run specific virtualized workloads in the EEC lab and study the impact of enabling replication on this virtualized infrastructure.
