Windows Server 2012 provides organizations with comprehensive capabilities for implementing an infrastructure for their own private IaaS environment and, when coupled with Microsoft System Center 2012, their own comprehensive IaaS environment. This guidance set addresses only the hardware and software planning, design, and implementation of a cloud infrastructure that includes core networking, storage, and compute capabilities; it does not address other capabilities required to implement a full IaaS environment, such as self-service provisioning and metered services.

This document is part of a lab-tested, integrated guidance set called the Cloud Infrastructure Solution for Enterprise IT. It includes the documents listed below. We recommend that you read them in the order listed, as higher-numbered items in this list assume you’ve read the lower-numbered items. As a result, if you do not do this, you may wonder what the context is for what’s being covered in some of the higher-numbered documents if you haven’t read the lower-numbered documents first:

        1. Scenario definition: Describes an example organization that is implementing a cloud infrastructure. It details the organization’s current environment and why they’ve chosen to implement a cloud infrastructure. Many organizations will likely find that they have similar environments and requirements.
        2. Design options guide: Details all of the planning considerations for hardware and software that comprise a cloud infrastructure. This includes the network, storage, and compute components of the infrastructure. Further, it addresses planning considerations for different types of availability, scalability, performance, and security needs.
        3. Design decisions guide: Details what design decisions, as defined in the Scenario Definition, were made from the considerations covered in the Design Options Guide, as well as the rationale for why they made the decisions.
        4. Implementation guide: Details the implementation steps for the design detailed in the Design Guide. This guide provides a step-by-step approach that can be used to build the cloud infrastructure.
