The practice of storing user data on individuals’ desktop or laptop PCs can decrease mobility, increase the potential for data loss, result in an increased user support workload, and increase infrastructure and operational costs. Windows Storage Server 2012 enables companies to avoid these issues by consolidating user data and profiles on centralized storage instead of storing them on individual user PCs. Companies that do so can benefit from increased data protection and security, improved mobility and availability, self-service user access to deleted or older versions of files, improved storage efficiency, and increased end user and IT productivity.

Home directory consolidation on Windows Storage Server 2012 is enabled by three key features:
        • Folder Redirection and Offline Files, which are used together to redirect the path of local folders to a network location while caching the contents locally on user PCs for increased speed and availability.
        • Roaming User Profiles, which is used to redirect user profiles to a network location.
This document examines each of the above technologies in detail, including prerequisites and an overview of deployment process. The document also examines complementary technologies in the Windows platform that can bring additional value to such deployments.
