The IE WebDriver Tool implements many of the high priority features from the W3C spec to allow developers to open a session, automate basic functionality against the pages, and return the results of the tests. The IE WebDriver Tool differs from JavaScript unit tests because it has additional access to functionality and information in the browser, and it can more accurately simulate user events or OS-level events.
