The Beta 2 Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions shipped with an issue that prevented the majority of the .NET Framework API reference documentation from appearing in the Table of Contents, Index, and Search Results windows for either Online or Local content. The source of the problem is faulty "filter" definitions. These issues have been fixed in later builds of the Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions.

*Note: The .NET Framework API reference documentation will only appear in the Table of Contents, Index and Local Search if you have also installed the MSDN Library for the Visual Studio Express Editions. The fix for online search results does not require the MSDN Express Edition Library to be installed on your computer.

      • This download provides a small tool that allows you to update the filter definitions in your Help system, which will enable the missing content to be availble in the Help viewer.

To update the filter definition files:

        1. Download and extract VSExpressB2HelpFix.exe to a folder on your computer's hard disk.

        2. From your local folder, run the filterfixer.exe tool, either by double-clicking on it in Windows Explorer or starting it from the command line. This fixes the problem for the Table of Contents and the Index.

        3. Copy all five of the .xml filter files (CSharpExpressAmbientFilter80.xml, and so on) to the following folder on your computer, overwriting the original versions of these files:
        \Program Files\Common files\Microsoft Shared\VS Help Data\8.0\Filters\1033

This fixes the problem for Local and Online Search.

Once you have completed these tasks, your Help collections should now give you access to the .NET Framework Managed Reference documentation.
