To easily assess the security state of Windows machines, Microsoft offers the free Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) scan tool. MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Microsoft Windows systems.
MBSA 2.3 builds on the previous MBSA 2.2 version that supports Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2, and Windows Server 2012 and corrects minor issues reported by customers. More information on the capabilities of MBSA is available on the MBSA Web site.
MBSA 2.3 runs on Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP systems and will scan for missing security updates, rollups and service packs using Microsoft Update technologies. To assess missing security updates, MBSA will only scan for missing security updates, update rollups and service packs available from Microsoft Update. MBSA will not scan or report missing non-security updates, tools or drivers.
The Wsusscan.cab file has grown with each new security release. Now, the number of files is approaching the maximum that can be included in a single CAB file. Microsoft is upgrading the internal format of the CAB file to resolve this issue.
All products, tools, and solutions that use the Wsusscan.cab file must be updated by March 2007 to use the new offline scan file. The existing CAB file will continue to be updated and published until March 2007. However, Microsoft will reduce the size of the existing CAB file by removing some security update content.
The wsusscn2.cab file contains metadata from the following update classifications: security updates, update rollups and service packs.
