IIS Media Services 2.0 is an integrated media platform that includes Smooth Streaming, Bit Rate Throttling, and Web Playlists.

IIS Media Services is a set of media-related extensions for Internet
Information Services (IIS) 7.0 that provides an integrated HTTP-based media
delivery platform. IIS Media Services 2.0 contains three extensions:
- Smooth Streaming – on-demand adaptive streaming to Silverlight
- Bit Rate Throttling – meters the speed that media is delivered to a
player
- Web Playlists – secure sequencing of media content
You can also download two additional beta IIS Media Services extensions from
the Microsoft Web
Platform Installer (Web PI) by selecting IIS Media Services 3.0 - Beta. The
two additional beta extensions available are:
- Live Smooth Streaming – live adaptive streaming for Silverlight
- Advanced Logging – rich, real-time client- and server-side logging

To install and use IIS Media Services 2.0:
- You must have administrative privileges on the PC
- Internet Information Services 7.0 must be installed, which you can accomplish
using one of the following methods:
- Install Using Windows Server 2008 Server Manager
- Install Using Web Platform Installer 2.0 Beta
- Go to the
Microsoft Web Platform Web page and download and run the Microsoft
Web Platform Installer 2.0 Beta.
- In the Web Platform Installer 2.0 Beta dialog box,
on the Web Platform tab, select Web Server
- Click Install and follow the prompts.

Click the Download button on this page to start the download, then
do one of the following:
- To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this
program from its current location.
- To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time,
click Save or Save this program to disk.
Installing this extension module requires full administrative permissions. This
is best accomplished using one of two methods:
- Log in to your computer using the local "administrator" account before
installation.
- Copy the download to your computer, then log in using an account with
administrator privileges and opening a command-prompt by right-clicking the
Command Prompt menu item that is located in the Accessories menu for Windows
programs and selecting "Run as administrator", then typing the command
listed below to run the installation:
msiexec /i IISMedia32.msi
Note: The above steps are required because the User Account Control (UAC)
security component in the Windows Server 2008 operating system will prevent
