ASB Bank and Telecom Take the Lead with Innovative Mobile Payment Solution

“mPayment provides our pre-paid customers with more choice in topping up their phone, in addition to scratch cards, credit cards, or ATM. From a convenience point of view, customers can top up wherever they are and whenever it suits them without having to worry about finding the nearest corner store.”

With New Zealand already a pioneer in the development of electronic payment technologies, Telecom New Zealand and ASB Bank are continuing this tradition by being first to launch a mobile payment (mPayment) solution. The payment service will enable consumers to securely pay for goods and services from their bank account using their mobile phone.

The first mobile commerce service to be launched, called mTopup, enables consumers with a Telecom pre- paid mobile phone and an ASB Bank account to top-up their airtime credit from their bank account via SMS text message, providing them with a further alternative to topping up their phone.

Created in partnership with Mobile Commerce Ltd (M-Com), the leading provider of innovative mobile payment solutions on the Microsoft .NET development platform, the collaboration is the first of its kind between a major telco and bank in New Zealand. The technology offers huge potential for future services, enabling consumers to purchase goods and services in situations where they don’t have access to traditional payment methods such as cash, EFTPOS or credit cards.
