Debunking the myth of law enforcement data and embracing “Consumerization of IT”

The number of smartphone users topped one billion users last year, and the market shows no signs of slowing down. Researchers predict that the number of users will double to two billion by 2015, especially as populations in emerging markets like China, India and Africa continue to adopt smartphone technology.

As smartphone usages becomes increasingly prevalent, so do discussions about the “Consumerization of IT” – the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) solution that allows workers to use their personal phones, tablets and PCs at work to access the same technology as they do at home. Many CIOs at national security and public safety agencies are searching for ways to support employee flexibility, efficiency, and productivity with BYOD, but often perceive obstacles when considering the task of managing and securing this new work environment.

In his captivating presentation “Digitising Policing,” Simon Parr, Chief Constable of the UK Cambridgeshire Constabulary, talks more about the realities and responsibilities of adopting Consumerization of IT in the public sector. He addresses some familiar myths of law enforcement IT, including:

  • Policing is different than other industries
  • Our data needs to be more secure than anyone else’s
  • We use information differently than anyone else

In truth, says Parr, police organizations are in the information business just like everyone else, and consumerizing IT can be an effective and cost-efficient way for them to achieve their mission – particularly in the “biting age of austerity.”
