As government organizations look for new ways to use their technology resources more efficiently, cloud computing continues to gain popularity for the range of benefits it offers. From cutting down on physical infrastructure costs to streamlining processes and services, moving to the cloud can bring about many positive outcomes for government organizations, particularly those who can benefit from the cloud’s economies of scale.
Today, I’m excited to tell you about how one organization did just that – the government of Albania. By switching over to a cloud computing environment, Albania was able to realize enormous benefits, most notably a dramatic increase in worker productivity, achieved by enabling key staff to shift their time spent managing infrastructure to being more strategic in developing solutions that address the Albanian government’s mission-critical priorities.
One of the biggest challenges facing Albania was the variety of platforms and technologies that the country’s agencies and ministries used. With so many disparate systems, employees found it difficult to host and manage the technology in an effective way. As a result, Albania’s National Agency for the Information Society (NAIS), the organization responsible for developing government IT initiatives, decided to set a strategy that would integrate the systems for a more cohesive, interoperable approach.
NAIS chose to adopt a private cloud solution that was based on two key ingredients: virtualization and centralized management. By implementing Microsoft Hyper-V, the system became fully interoperable with the organization’s existing Microsoft technologies and created a much simpler system to manage.
The application servers are now standardized throughout the government, meaning that ministries and agencies get more responsive service and can focus their time on solutions, rather than infrastructure. The migration has also freed up IT employees’ time and eliminated the need to work overtime hours. In addition, productivity of IT employees has increased roughly 70%, training needs have been reduced by months, and staffing needs have gone down by about 10%.
