Empowering Consumers

Microsoft's commitment to patient-centric healthcare and data liberation

Microsoft would like to reaffirm our public commitment to data liberation and patient-centric healthcare, and the ways in which we empower consumers to become more actively engaged in managing their health.
Empowering Consumers – What’s Next in Health

We demonstrate these principles every day by:

  • Calling for data sharing across the health ecosystem
  • Delivering open, trusted platforms that enable the free flow of data, with privacy and security in place
  • Building value for consumers who want to control, use, and share their personal health information to help manage their health

Our products—Microsoft HealthVault and Microsoft Amalga—support our principles, placing people at the center of care and in control of their personal health information, which they can share with caregivers and other trusted parties.

Microsoft HealthVault supports both Blue Button and the Direct Project protocol from The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC):
  • The Blue Button upload service allows any Medicare/Medicaid or Veteran Administration patient to upload their Blue Button data file to HealthVault so that the included medications, labs, conditions, and other information can be used in a wide range of HealthVault-connected applications.
  • The HealthVault Message Center enables patients to receive encrypted email messages through their HealthVault accounts. Messages can be sent from participating providers using security protocols set forth by the ONC’s Direct Project. As a result, providers are able to meet objectives of meaningful use and deliver better and more timely care by sharing visit summaries, important reminders, and other information electronically with their patients.
Increasingly, health systems and hospitals are using Microsoft Amalga, an enterprise health intelligence platform, in conjunction with HealthVault to create a connected health system. Amalga is designed to help a health enterprise streamline operations and coordinate care across boundaries. By connecting to HealthVault, a health system can empower their patients with copies of their personal health information and deepen patient relationships.
Stay tuned to see how Microsoft continues to work with customers and partners on developing tools that enable and promote action by patients and consumers.
