Microsoft HealthVault-Enabled Devices– What’s Next in Health

How do HealthVault-enabled devices work?

Uploading data
A user starts by downloading and installing Microsoft HealthVault Connection Center, a free program that runs on Microsoft Windows. From there, a user can upload data from HealthVault-enabled devices to a free Microsoft HealthVault record.
Using uploaded data
Once users have their device data in their HealthVault record, they can share it with friends, family members, healthcare providers, and HealthVault-enabled tools.
Manufacturers can expand their potential market by offering end-to-end solutions that enable users to not just read their data but also find new ways to act on it.

How do I get a “Works with Microsoft HealthVault” logo on my device?

The HealthVault logo helps consumers quickly identify products that are designed to work with HealthVault and gives consumers confidence that a device meets the usability and performance requirements of HealthVault.

1. Complete the agreements

All manufacturers must complete agreements prior to obtaining the logos, branding guidelines, and HealthVault inserts for the device packaging. Please contact hvlogo@microsoft.com for copies of the agreements or to request logos, branding guidelines and HealthVault inserts once the proper agreements have been signed.

2. Develop a HealthVault-compatible driver for your device

Manufacturers wishing to connect their devices to a PC to upload data to HealthVault must develop a driver that is compatible with HealthVault Connection Center (HVCC). HVCC is an application that runs on the PC and manages the data exchange between the device and HealthVault.

3. Certify your device

The Works with Microsoft HealthVault Test Kit includes the requirements, test procedures, and tools required to test your device yourself prior to submitting to a Microsoft-designated independent testing lab (ITL). The ITL will use the same requirements, test procedures, and tools to verify your device has passed the tests.
Once you have found a test lab, contact them directly to certify your device and obtain a certification ID.

HealthVault Solution Provider Operating and Privacy Requirements

HealthVault solution provider agreements differ from other Microsoft solution provider agreements in one important way: HealthVault solution providers must agree to privacy requirements that are unique to HealthVault. You can view an example of the operating and privacy requirements to get an idea of what is involved. Solutions that are HIPAA Covered may choose to add the HealthVault HIPAA Business Association Agreement.
