IIS Overview

 

Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5 presents simplified, distributed management through a set of customizable administration tools with easier application deployment for developers. Site configuration management and publishing can now be delegated with distributed configuration enabling those who host or administer websites to delegate site-level administrative control to developers or content owners. The Web Deployment Tool enables you to package configuration and content of your installed web applications, including SQL databases, and use the packages for storage or redeployment.

 

 

IIS 7.5 also introduces a flexible platform with enhanced support for multiple application development platforms and media content delivery. The new modular architecture makes it easy to add, remove, and replace any built-in module or third-party module. Bit Rate Throttling controls the speed of delivery for files. Powerful customization features in web playlists allow you to insert advertisement media and dynamically determine content downloaded. With FastCGI support, CGI and FastCGI-based web applications, including PHP applications, run faster while maintaining stability. Native and managed code requests are processed by default through a new integrated pipeline, allowing different application frameworks to run within a single web server request pipeline.

 

 

IIS 7.5 offers increased availability through dynamic request handling, improved caching, and powerful troubleshooting tools. URL Rewriter for IIS 7.5 enables administrators to create powerful rules to implement easy to remember URLs for web pages, improve search results by making site URLs search engine-friendly, map static URLs, and enforce a consistent host name for a site. Integrated HTTP-based load balancing and routing come to life with Application Request Routing (ARR), enabling hosting providers and web server administrators to increase application and server availability by providing proxy-based routing functionality for incoming HTTP requests.

 

 

IIS 7.5 provides improved security and server protection through reduced server footprint, enhanced publishing, and request filtering capabilities. IIS 7.5 has been redesigned to incorporate a modular architecture to customize web servers by selectively installing or removing modules, reducing the attack surface. To further limit security exposure, a minimal environment with the Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008 R2 is available. URL Scan 3.0 and Request Filtering help protect servers from malicious requests increasing web server security with multiple filtering options, including blocking specific HTTP requests helping to prevent potentially harmful requests from reaching applications on the server.
