Doug: we call it dogfooding because at Microsoft we use our own products before we release them to customers - a practice in the old days known as "eating our own dogfood." Geeks tend to turn nouns into verbs. Don’t tell anyone, but we have a few geeks working at Microsoft, hence, eating our own dogfood becomes "dogfooding." Dogfooding is meant to both improve product quality pre-release, but also to teach us what our users go through, as well as to improve our individual productivity.
