HINARI Bach Mai Hosptial in Vietnam
At the Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam, doctors and staff have utilized journals and research found through HINARI, the Research4Life program providing free or low-cost access to cutting-edge global healthcare research for developing countries. With HINARI’s resources, Bach Mai has built one of the country’s most modern health facilities and medical libraries. Benefitting from a free annual subscription to HINARI, the hospital now employs 800 doctors and supports over 2,200 patients.

UNHCR Partnership - ProGres Solution
The registration system currently used by UNHCR is called ProGres and was developed with initial support from Microsoft. The system operates in over 300 refugee camps across 72 countries today, including 32 in Africa. Through registration and the use of ProGres, thousands of refugees now have their refugee status confirmed which has opened up access to more rights including their freedom of movement. This has also improved their lives helping them to successfully integrate into the local community.

UNHCR Partnership - Council of Business Leaders
As part of Microsoft’s partnership with UNHCR, we are a founding member of UNHCR’s Council of Business Leaders; members include Microsoft, Nike, PricewaterhouseCoopers, WPP and Merck. On the first Council of Business Leaders Mission trip to Africa in 2006, executives from all of the member companies traveled for a week with UNHCR to learn firsthand about the issues facing UNHCR, host governments and refugees.

Nepad Partnership eSchools
Under the NEPAD-Microsoft public private partnership, Microsoft lead one of the five pilot eSchools implementation consortiums. Implementing technology in over 25 schools in Kenya, Lesotho, Mauritius, Cameroon, Senegal, Mozambique and Rwanda and reaching out to over 1,000 teachers and 20,000 students. The aim of NEPAD eSchools is to ultimately connect all 600,000 primary and secondary schools in Africa. This video offers a close up view of one of the eSchool pilots in Rwanda.

Research4Life - SUMAWA Project in Kenya
As part of our work with UNEP, WHO and FAO, Microsoft as the technology partner for the Research4Life program, has developed a new access and authentication platform offering researchers and academics in developing countries online access to over 7,500 peer-reviewed scientific journals, books and databases from over 130 publishers including Elsevier, Springer Verlag and Wiley-Blackwell. This video offers a case study on the SUMAWA project in Kenya’s Rift Valley, aided by access to research; the program is having an impressive impact on the local community, endangered tribes and wildlife in the area.
