The registration system currently used by UNHCR is called ProGres and was developed with initial support from Microsoft. The system operates in over 300 refugee camps across 72 countries today, including 32 in Africa. Through registration and the use of ProGres, thousands of refugees now have their refugee status confirmed which has opened up access to more rights including their freedom of movement. This has also improved their lives helping them to successfully integrate into the local community.

As part of our work with UNEP, WHO and FAO, Microsoft as the technology partner for the Research4Life program, has developed a new access and authentication platform offering researchers and academics in developing countries online access to over 7,500 peer-reviewed scientific journals, books and databases from over 130 publishers including Elsevier, Springer Verlag and Wiley-Blackwell. This video offers a case study on the SUMAWA project in Kenya’s Rift Valley, aided by access to research; the program is having an impressive impact on the local community, endangered tribes and wildlife in the area.

NAIROBI, Kenya — On March 31, 2011, Microsoft Corp. announced its ITPAC datacenter technology will be utilized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as part of the energy-efficient IT infrastructure for a new UN office in Nairobi, Kenya, aimed at being energy neutral. Officially inaugurated by UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon and UN Under-Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, the new office building in Nairobi is intended to produce as much energy as it consumes and is the first of its kind for the UN in Africa.

Peanut farmers near Bogor, Indonesia have benefited from a technology center set up by the Bogor Institute of Agriculture in partnership with Microsoft which has provided them with access to the internet for the first time. They learned best practices from other farmers and have doubled their profits within a year of switching to new farming techniques after accessing research from the technology center.
