As part of Microsoft’s longstanding commitment to privacy, we mark Data Privacy Day every year through a variety of efforts. Held annually on January 28, Data Privacy Day aims to increase awareness of privacy and data protection issues among consumers, organizations, and government officials.
We know our customers want and expect strong privacy protections to be built into our products, devices, and services, and for companies to be responsible stewards of consumers’ data. We’ve been focused on this area for more than 10 years as part of Trustworthy Computing at Microsoft (PDF, 690 KB).

Microsoft commissioned research in the United States, Belgium, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and found that for the most part people feel they have limited control over how their data is used online (53 percent of the time in the US and 43 percent of the time in Europe) and are interested in understanding how their information is being used.
