Staff the weak link in IT security

Fri, 28 Oct 2011

Staff are often the weak link when it comes to IT security breaches, according to recent research.

Figures from Data Defender show that businesses invest in all manner of technologies to protect their important information but then fail to take into account the problems human error can cause.

A recent survey highlighted that two thirds of workers have received no training on IT security issues, meaning that they often make simple mistakes such as using easy-to-crack passwords and opening emails from unknown contacts.

Graeme Batsman from Data Defender, said: “A large proportion of workers do not see data security as an issue while others view it only as a problem for the IT department and technical staff. With the use of advanced hardware and software now ubiquitous and access to company data at our fingertips, we must all take responsibility for protecting our digital lives. There are many simple, cost effective measures that companies can take to improve security, without in-depth technical knowledge."

He added that a change of mindset and the right training can often make all the difference.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Crest and e-Skills UK have teamed up to help address the IT security skills gaps which exists in the UK.

The two bodies will offer a new skills development initiative which will see young people being sent on professional placements within the industry to gain hands on experience.
