CHAPTER ONE
ELEVATING YOUR BUSINESS: THE VALUE OF THE CLOUD
We're here to give you a grounded, clear-eyed view of your options in the cloud. And we'll look at how you can use innovative security technologies as you move a little or a lot of your business to the cloud, all with an eye to driving impact for your business.
Today's cloud solutions give employees the power to be more productive without being bound to the physical workplace. And IT is discovering significant cost savings as they transition their servers, server maintenance, and productivity workloads to the cloud. So what does the future hold?

By 2012, 20 percent of businesses will own no IT assets. (Gartner, December 2009)
80 percent of large enterprise IT managers are at least in trial stage for cloud computing initiatives. (F5 Networks, 2009)
The number of enterprise customers using mobile cloud-based applications will rise to more than 130 million by 2014. (Juniper Research, March 2010)
3
STARTING POINT: THE CLOUD DEFINED

As you'll see in "A Cloud of One's Own," cloud computing refers to:
IT services that are purchased and delivered on demand over a network, either the public Internet or a private IP-based network.
LET'S TALK RESULTS

The value of the cloud is built around broad access to low-cost, standard applications that can be configured to fit the unique needs of your business. As organizations transition to the cloud, they're seeing their costs shift from capital expenditures to operating expenditures as IT spends significantly less time customizing applications and more time creating actual business value.
YOU'VE GOT OPTIONS

Businesses considering the move to the cloud have a broad range of options—from public, to private, to hybrid clouds.

The Microsoft public cloud—the Windows Azure™ platform—allows companies to build,
4
host and scale applications in shared off-site datacenters. There are no up-front expenses and IT only pays for the resources they use, without having to worry about a long-term commitment.

A private cloud, on the other hand, is a cloud services implementation on resources dedicated to your organization, whether they exist on-premises or off-premises. With a Microsoft private cloud, you get many of the benefits of public cloud computing—including self-service, scalability, and elasticity—with the additional control and customization available from dedicated resources.

Still other companies are taking a hybrid approach by hosting services like e-mail, contact management, and calendaring in the public cloud while continuing to keep business-critical information or software on-site for a perfect mix of security, reliability, and scalability.

COCA-COLA MOVES TO THE CLOUD

The global beverage powerhouse faced strong competition and needed to improve communications to keep pace with an increasingly mobile and distributed workforce. Their challenges may be similar to your own:

E-mail-based communications fell short of meeting their productivity needs
IT had to create and manage multiple platforms, reducing the time they could devote to value-added opportunities
Many members of the workforce had limited access to the corporate network
Coca-Cola considered several options, before implementing a hosted solution with a robust intranet portal to support worldwide collaboration and communication.

YOU MAY BE WONDERING...

What do Microsoft cloud solutions provide that virtualization does not offer by itself?
With Microsoft cloud solutions, your applications take center stage. By leveraging automation and pools of compute and storage resources you can focus on the application, not the infrastructure. And with Microsoft's cost comprehensive approach to cloud computing, you can harness as much cloud power as you need while remaining in full control—whether it's in your datacenter, a partner datacenter, or Microsoft datacenters.

How does moving from virtualization to a private cloud provide more value to your business?
Only Microsoft's private cloud uses in-depth knowledge to manage applications, employing orchestration and automation to enable end-to-end service management. With Microsoft, your applications drive the resources such as virtual machines, storage, and memory. With other offerings, you're stuck just managing resources rather than focusing on what matters most: delivering business value through your applications.
7
So how can cloud computing provide the flexibility to deliver applications on your terms?
Microsoft helps put you in control of your applications, wherever you choose to deploy them. Only Microsoft provides common management, identity, and development tools that work across private and public cloud environments. This gives you the ability to run and manage applications with the solution that delivers the greatest business value.

But is the cloud right for your business?
In the end, only you can decide if the cloud is right for you. What we can tell you is that many businesses are moving to the cloud and experiencing:

Decreased capital expenditures
Greater availability and scalability
Significantly reduced operating expenses
Only Microsoft provides common tools that work across private and public cloud environments.
8

With Microsoft cloud solutions, you also get:

Freedom to move to the cloud at your pace (we'll show you how in Chapter 2)
An unparalleled set of private and public cloud solutions to choose from
Ability to use products, tools, and interfaces you already know and trust
A comprehensive set of solutions designed with security as the top concern
If you're still not convinced — not only that you should move to the cloud, but that you should move now — listen to Ron Markezich, former CIO at Microsoft, as he talks about today's business trends and why they're leading more businesses to turn to cloud computing solutions.
9

SO WHAT'S NEXT?

Now that you've received a full introduction to the power and flexibility of cloud
computing, it's time to talk about how to move your business to the cloud, on your
terms— read on.
10
CHAPTER TWO
CLIMBING THE LADDER TO THE CLOUD:
ONE STEP AT A TIME

In Chapter 1, we showed how cloud computing is delivering real
benefits to businesses like yours. We also looked at the differences between private, public, and hybrid deployments and the advan-
tages of each. For a quick recap, check out Chapter 1.
Our goal in this chapter is to show you how you can get started, and how you can move to the cloud, one step at a time—on your own terms.

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CLOUD TO DO?

There are many different reasons to move to the cloud. Perhaps you need to lower your IT costs? Or maybe you want to focus more on improving availability and scalability? A key part of the decision-making process is figuring out what your goals and priorities are and then determining how the cloud can help you get there.

GET A CUSTOMIZED CLOUD POWER REPORT

To get started, simply answer three key questions and you'll get a customized "Cloud Power Report" that explains in detail how cloud computing can address the specific challenges you've identified.

Once you know exactly how the cloud can help in the areas that matter most to your business, you'll be ready to look at your options.
See what cloud solution is right for your business by requesting a customized "Cloud Power Report"
12

THE CLOUD ON YOUR TERMS

People talk about "moving to the cloud" as if it's an all-or-none proposition. That's simply not the case. Microsoft provides a full range of cloud services so you can design the perfect productivity solution for your business—combining today's cloud offerings with your own current or expanded on-premises IT infrastructure.

SO WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS?

Continue using existing on-premises solutions
Host some of your IT services (like email) in a public cloud while keeping other applications and services on-site
Create a private cloud managed by your own IT department
Use a hybrid solution that combines public and private options
Move all your applications to a public cloud
As you'll see in the two-page paper called "Today's cloud — on your terms, for your enterprise," having all these options means you don't have to go all-in — you can build the cloud solution you want, and move there at your own pace.
People talk about "moving to the cloud" as if it's an all-or-none proposition. That's simply not the case.
13

HOW DO OTHER BUSINESSES DECIDE?

From public to private to hybrid cloud solutions, you have a lot of options to consider. So it may help to take an inside look at a business that has already walked through the consideration stage.

The Associated Press created an application programming interface (API), which developers around the globe use to incorporate AP news content into their applications. Initially, the AP considered an on-premises solution to deliver the content through the API, but they worried about several issues common to on-premises solutions: lengthy planning processes, costly upfront investments, and possible impacts on existing services and systems.

That's when the AP started exploring several cloud-based platforms for their developers, before finally settling on the Windows Azure™ platform.

The AP started exploring several cloud-based platforms before finally settling on the Windows Azure™ platform.
14

WHY WINDOWS AZURE?

You'll get all the details in the case study, but for the AP, the benefits with Windows Azure were clear:

A powerful operating system and a set of developer services that can be used individually or together, on a pay-as-you-go basis
Simple scalability — so the business can scale parts of the solution without need for capacity planning
Alignment with their existing Microsoft technology
Ease of deployment and management
15

CRITICAL QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

When planning your move to the cloud, consider these key questions:

What is your current IT strategy and what are its costs?
What are your requirements for a cloud solution (e.g., must save money, provide easy scalability, reduce burden on IT)
What are your options? (e.g., public, private, or hybrid cloud)
What are your key concerns? (e.g., security, integration with legacy systems)
Which, if any, applications do you want or need to keep on-premises?
(e.g., customized applications)
Do you have the IT resources to create and support a private cloud solution?
WHAT'S NEXT?

Check back soon for Chapters 3 and 4. Your business faces countless threats to enterprise IT security and you need a cloud solution you can trust. In the next chapter, we'll show you how Microsoft is helping business around the globe address security threats with robust security features and the power of the cloud.
16

CHAPTER THREE
BUT CAN I TRUST THE CLOUD?
Security is a concern for every customer considering a move to cloud computing. That's why Microsoft has integrated security across private and public clouds, so you have control of, and access to all your applications and data wherever they reside.
THE CHALLENGE FACING THE ENTERPRISE

With more and more workers on the go, your business information is likely being accessed by more people working from more places and on more platforms than ever before. As a result:

IT is becoming more vulnerable as cyber attacks become more sophisticated and more malicious
Data backup and recovery are an increasing drain on IT budgets as companies address the sheer quantity of data generated by everyday business operations
A Microsoft cloud solution can provide the capacity you need without sacrificing security. In fact, we offer a level of security that is far beyond what many customers say they could afford on their own.

WHERE TO BEGIN

You should start by considering which workloads to move to the cloud, and which to maintain on-premises. For example, you might decide to host services like e-mail and calendaring in the cloud while continuing to keep business-critical information or software on-site for a perfect mix of security, reliability, and scalability.
18

PLAYING IT SAFE IN THE CLOUD

Microsoft delivers the cloud on your terms, with unified identity, security, and management across public and private clouds. And our end-to-end approach means security technology is baked into every stage of software and services development. We also effectively monitor and respond to threats, and research emerging threats to help protect against those threats before they become problems. All to help you sleep better at night.

T-Mobile USA connects with the power of the cloud
T-Mobile, a leading provider of wireless services, wanted to create a secure mobile application to simplify communications for families. With Windows Azure, T-Mobile was able to launch an application in the cloud that offers their customers a significant level of protection that includes private key encryption and data centers with multiple security controls.

With Windows Communication Foundation—a component of the .NET Framework—the team was able to create a web service that used HTTPS and Transport Layer Security. It also implemented certificate-based authentication. And, by taking advantage of an integrated development environment and cloud services, the company completed the project in just six weeks.

20

SO WHICH CLOUD PROVIDER SHOULD
YOU TRUST?

Many providers are relative newcomers to the cloud. This isn't the case with Microsoft. In fact, since the launch of MSN® in 1994, Microsoft has been building and running services in the cloud. And we manage a cloud infrastructure and platform for online services providing 24-hour availability for millions of customers around the world.
21

WE TRUST THE CLOUD TO RUN OUR BUSINESS.

We don't just talk about the cloud, we put it to the test every single day. In fact, we trust the cloud to run over 200 of our own online services and web portals, including:

The leading CRM program from Microsoft gives companies the power of a full-fledged customer relationship management system with the flexibility and scalability of the cloud.
Hotmail is the largest free email service on the planet with 360 million unique users per month.
Bing is more than just a search engine; it's a decision engine with 28% US market share, and it's powered by the cloud. See for yourself.
Microsoft has been building and running services in the cloud since the launch of MSN® in 1994.
22
HERE'S HOW MICROSOFT PROVIDES ADVANCED SECURITY IN THE CLOUD:

By using a risk-based information security program that assesses and prioritizes security and operational threats to the business
By maintaining and updating a detailed set of security controls that mitigate risk
Operating a compliance framework that ensures controls are designed appropriately and are operating effectively

CLOUD COVER YOU CAN COUNT ON

Now that we've hit the 30,000 foot view, let's break down the types of security that Microsoft delivers to help you guard your infrastructure and protect your data in the cloud. And you'll see that from application to physical security and from network to data defense, we've got you covered.

Built-in application security
As part of our commitment to Trustworthy Computing, Microsoft focuses on security from the earliest stages of the software development process. And our cloud applications are no different.
23

To that end, our cloud products and services – including Hyper-V, System Center, Office 365, and Windows Azure—were designed and built according to the rigorous security practices encoded in the Microsoft Security Development Lifecycle (SDL). The SDL is constantly updated and freely shared within the software industry to help drive better security practices across vendors and platforms.

Locking down physical security
$2.3 billion is a lot of money, no matter how you cut it. But that's exactly how much we've invested in building a massive network of highly secure redundant servers around the globe so we can continue to deliver trustworthy solutions in the cloud, whether private or public. And these servers are protected by the latest technology solutions like cameras, biometrics, card readers, and alarms, as well as traditional security measures like lock and key—designed to help you protect your data from threats ranging from natural disasters to power outages to geopolitical disruption.

"Data is stored in a primary data center, and then a secondary data center
that's separated by hundreds or thousands of miles."
Chris Capossela, Senior Vice President, Microsoft
We've invested $2.3 billion in building a network of highly secure redundant servers around the globe.
24

Guarding your network
Unfortunately cyber-attackers aren't going away anytime soon. That's why Microsoft has built a complex line of defense against attackers and would-be intruders. We apply layers of security to data center devices and network connections so you can protect your information. And we manage volume-based denial of service (DoS) attacks by using specialized hardware including load balancers, firewalls, and intrusion prevention devices.

Sure, no one likes to be attacked by the bad guys, but it's nice to know you have a robust defense in place for when it does happen.

Defending your data
We help you keep cyber crooks guessing. Microsoft gives you powerful tools—like the risk-based information security programs, security controls, and compliance frameworks provided in the public cloud with Windows Azure—so you can help make sure only the right people access the right information. We also classify assets to determine the strength of security controls to apply.

All Microsoft products meet the SDL cryptographic standards. And we use a need-to-know and least-privilege model to manage access to assets.

"We are confident Microsoft has the resources to provide us with more robust security and reliability than we can do ourselves." Stefan Truthän, CIO, hhpberlin
26

CONFIDENCE IN THE CLOUD

By now, it should be pretty clear that we are very serious about information security. And our commitment to advanced security means you can be freed up to focus on creating value in the cloud and experience the peace of mind that comes from a trustworthy computing experience.
SO WHAT'S NEXT?

In the final chapter, we'll take a look at three powerful cloud solutions that can help you transition to the cloud. And we'll show you why cloud computing is within your reach, today.
27

CHAPTER FOUR
BUILDING YOUR CLOUD FROM THE GROUND UP
Some people are saying the cloud is revolutionary, but we beg to differ. You see, we've been building and running services in the cloud for 17 years and counting. And now we're helping businesses around the globe take advantage of the low-cost scalability and advanced security of the Microsoft cloud – the next logical step in enterprise productivity.
THE CLOUD IS WITHIN YOUR REACH. TODAY.

We've discussed the various options for moving to the cloud and we've talked about what to look for in a more secure cloud solution. We've also shown how your company can cut capital expenditures and give productivity a boost with the power of the cloud.

In this chapter we'll show you three powerful cloud solutions – Hyper-V virtualization, Office 365, and Windows Azure – and demonstrate how these products are helping companies like Target, Patagonia, and Boeing evolve to meet some of today's greatest business challenges.

We'll also explore how you can leverage the skills you already have, and investments you've already made, to move to the cloud in the way that works best for your business—whether that's a public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid deployment.

Leading businesses are evolving to meet today's greatest challenges.
29

"BUT I LOVE MY SERVERS!"

Not to fear. Unlike other cloud providers, Microsoft doesn't force you to move to the cloud and leave your servers behind. Instead, we help you maximize your IT investments by combining today's cloud offerings—from private to public—with your current or expanded on-premises infrastructure. And Microsoft cloud-computing solutions are built from products, tools and interfaces you know and trust paving the way for a seamless transition for information workers and IT alike.

"Cloud computing really enables IT professionals to get out of the game of patching servers and managing infrastructure and instead allows them to really focus on what will differentiate them from the competition."
—Chris Capossela, Microsoft SVP

THE POWER OF VIRTUALIZATION

Hyper-V provides a reliable and optimized virtualization solution, so you can get the most from your servers and cut costs. It easily plugs into your existing IT environment so you can:

Leverage your existing patching, provisioning, management, and support tools, processes, and skills
Take advantage of a small footprint and minimal overhead because Hyper-V Server is a dedicated, standalone product
And with the addition of Microsoft System Center, businesses can capture and aggregate knowledge about their infrastructure, policies, processes, and best practices. All this so IT can optimize IT structures to reduce costs, improve application availability, and enhance service delivery.

31

See why Target went with Hyper-V and System Center
Target demands reliable, scalable, and cost-effective technology so they can continue to deliver on their brand promise of "Expect More. Pay Less." With that in view, Target is deploying Windows Server 2008 Datacenter and its Hyper-V virtualization technology to retire 8,650 servers and implement a two-servers-per-store policy.

By 2012, Target's entire store server infrastructure will be running on Hyper-V, which will support a total of 15,000 virtual machines running mission-critical applications. Target is also using Microsoft System Center to manage more than 300,000 endpoints across its retail network. And with its Microsoft Virtualization solution, the company will save millions of dollars in hardware, electrical, and maintenance costs.
Target will save millions of dollars in hardware, electrical, and maintenance costs.

UNLEASH PRODUCTIVITY WITH OFFICE 365

Microsoft business collaboration solutions make it easier for teams to work together, with significant costs savings on-premises and in the cloud. With Microsoft Office 365, there’s no need to worry about costly server deployment or time-consuming server maintenance tasks.

And because it’s designed to work with the Office applications your people already know, Office 365 gives workers the best productivity experience across PC, phone, and browser*—without requiring a heavy investment in retraining.

Patagonia blazes a trail to the Cloud with Office 365
Patagonia, a global provider of outdoor apparel and gear, wanted a new solution for unified communications to help employees around the globe work better together. The IT staff also needed to upgrade its aging messaging solution. So when the company heard about the next-generation online services from Microsoft, it decided to evaluate Microsoft Office 365, which includes the latest version of the Microsoft Office Professional Plus desktop suite.

Based on their pilot of Office 365, Patagonia expects employees to communicate more effectively and make better design decisions. Patagonia also believes Office 365 will help it reduce IT costs, improve business continuity, and support its environmental initiatives.
