Stijn Nauwelaerts

General Manager of Human Resources, Microsoft International

Stijn Nauwelaerts was appointed to his current role of General Manager of Human Resources (HR) for Microsoft International in May 2011.


Stijn has a Masters in Law from the University of Leuven (Belgium) and Poitiers (France), and a Masters in Social Law from the University of Liège (Belgium). He spent the first three years of his career in consultancy, and moved afterwards to the Bank of New York, where he had a variety of roles within HR over the course of his seven year tenure. In his last position, Stijn was the VP of HR for the Brussels and Luxembourg branches of The Bank of New York.


Since joining Microsoft in 2001 as the HR Country Manager for Belgium and Luxembourg, Stijn has held a number of strategic HR roles with progressive leadership responsibilities, and during the four years he led the Benelux HR organization, the subsidiary was elected twice as Belgium’s Best Employer. Stijn transitioned from this role in 2004 to lead the HR function for the Microsoft EMEA Headquarters in Paris, and in November 2006 was promoted to HR Director for Central and Eastern Europe playing a major role in establishing Microsoft's new subsidiaries in Eastern Europe with regional HR accountability across 30 countries and 23 subsidiaries.


As the General Manager for International HR, Stijn is responsible for Microsoft’s HR Strategy & Operations outside of North America and Canada, working across 110 subsidiaries that comprise 35,000 employees. Stijn thrives on the diversity and complexity that comes with driving a global people-focused agenda, and is passionate about partnering with the business leaders to create an environment that values integrity, honesty, openness, personal excellence, and mutual respect. In December 2011, Microsoft was recognized as the World’s Best Multinational Workplace by the Great Place to Work Institute.


Stijn lives in Belgium with his wife and three children. He enjoys various pastimes—especially outdoor activities—and is an avid cyclist and runner.
