The incorporation of cloud-based services into the set of companies' technological resources is an indisputable reality. It is not a matter of thinking about throwing out all the resources currently available in your company's IT center –or a simple set of servers– but of understanding how that local infrastructure can be complemented by the on-line benefits, whether integral platform capacities, personnel productivity and communications solutions, security or even social computing for internal use.
Microsoft has grown substantially in recent years in terms of its base of customers who select its different tools in the cloud. For example, Telefónica will install Microsoft Office 365 and Yammer (the corporate social network creation environment ) on a global level for its commercial offices. This project reaches more than 130,000 employees in 24 countries and predicts a notable impact not only personnel productivity but also on the capacity to develop new products and services for its customers. The company's objective is to reduce collaboration services costs by up to 20 per cent, even by making the organization's security and privacy model sustainable. Other crucial capacities included the communications unified through Microsoft Lync 2013 and SkyDrive Pro cloud storage. Microsoft Cloud Vantage Services will assist Telefónica to achieve a successful and complete migration to the cloud.
Arysta LifeScience is one of the largest worldwide private agrochemical companies with sales and services in more than 125 countries. In its attempt to connect 34 different e-mail environments, at first Arysta opted for Google Apps but very quickly found that the employees were not happy with the experience – they could not share calendars and their off-line capacities were limited – so the company changed to Office 365. Now, not only they can integrate their e-mails and their shared calendars but they can also use instant messaging and web conferences to connect with their colleagues around the world while they are on the move or are working from home. "With Office 365 we are able to interact and maintain working relationships among us to a greater extent, which enables us to respond to new opportunities quickly and efficiently. As a result, we are a more agile and competitive organization", said Dustin Collins, Arysta LifeScience's Global IT Infrastructure Director.
As we mentioned in previous editions, Toyota, Orígenes, the Argentinian insurance and retirement savings company, the 'Manuel Velasco Suarez' National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico, the Brazilian TV company, Globosat, recently joined the chain of ice cream parlors Helacor, Allianz Colombia, among many others.
In expanding the spectrum of possibilities in the cloud, Microsoft recently announced the virtual capacity to mount diverse Linux machines, as well as the Windows Server in Azure, in which existing applications may be run without the need to rewrite them. Companies such as Herbalife, Japan's Department of Economy, Commerce and Industry, BMW Latin America, Avanade, Norway's Telenor, Cullinan –the new global game platform Polycode-, the sports car manufacturer Aston Martin and the Stock Exchange of Colombia, among others, are all reaping the benefits of Azure as an environment in which to mount business applications that have a high impact on their operations.
As can be appreciated in the examples mentioned, the trend reaches both large companies and small and medium organizations that can cut the costs of entrusting the IT management to providers that lack the sufficient experience and know-how to respond to their needs, thereby freeing up resources to invest in their development.
