Microsoft Global High Tech Summit 2011 Recap

On February 10th 2011, over 300 high tech industry executives, analysts, and members of the press gathered in Santa Clara, CA to attend the 5th annual Microsoft Global High Tech Summit at the Marriott Hotel, Santa Clara, CA.
 
The theme for the summit was "Navigating the New Normal," and event keynotes, solution sessions, sponsor pavilion kiosks, and hallway networking conversations focused on sharing "Big Ideas" for how information technology solutions can help attendees succeed with all the changes that define the new normal.

He is responsible for the development and execution of Microsoft's industry strategy and solutions portfolio with key industry solutions partners and customers across the semiconductor, electronics, software, and computer segments. His team focuses on helping high tech companies enable their people to improve value chain performance, accelerate product development, achieve operational excellence and build customer centricity.
Drew has over 15 years of experience in the high-tech and manufacturing industry serving in various leadership roles at Seebeyond Technology Corporation, eTime Capital, Philips Electronics and General Electric.

Nicholas Carr
Bestselling Author
 
Nicholas Carr writes on the social, economic, and business implications of technology. He is the author of the 2008 Wall Street Journal bestseller The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google, which is "widely considered to be the most influential book so far on the cloud computing movement," according the Christian Science Monitor. His earlier book, Does IT Matter?, published in 2004, "lays out the simple truths of the economics of information technology in a lucid way, with cogent examples and clear analysis," said the New York Times. His latest book, The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, was published in 2010. Carr's books have been translated into more than a dozen languages.
 
Carr has written for many periodicals, including The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Magazine, Wired, The Financial Times, Die Zeit, The Futurist, and Advertising Age, and has been a columnist for The Guardian and The Industry Standard. His much-discussed essay "Is Google Making Us Stupid?," which appeared as the cover story of the Atlantic Monthly's Ideas issue in the summer of 2008, has been collected in three popular anthologies:The Best American Science and Nature Writing, The Best Technology Writing, and The Best Spiritual Writing. Carr has written a personal blog, Rough Type, since 2005. He is a member of the Encyclopaedia Britannica's editorial board of advisors and is on the steering board of the World Economic Forum's cloud computing project.
 
Earlier in his career, Carr was executive editor of the Harvard Business Review and a principal at Mercer Management Consulting.
 
Carr has been a speaker at MIT, Harvard, Wharton, the Kennedy School of Government, NASA, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas as well as at many industry, corporate, and professional events throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.A., in English and American literature and language, from Harvard University.

Steve R. Appleton
CEO, Micron Technology, Inc.
 
Steve Appleton is chairman and chief executive officer of Micron Technology Inc. Mr. Appleton joined Micron in 1983 and has held a series of increasingly responsible positions, including production manager, director of manufacturing, and vice president of manufacturing. In 1991, he was appointed president and chief operating officer of Micron and in 1994 he was appointed to the position of chairman, chief executive officer and president. He assumed his current position in 2007.
 
Mr. Appleton currently serves on the board of directors for the Semiconductor Industry Association and National Semiconductor, Inc. He is also a member of the World Semiconductor Council and serves on the Idaho Business Council. He received a bachelor of business administration degree from Boise State University in 1982 and an honorary doctorate from Boise State University in 2007.

Richard (Rick) F. Rashid
Senior Vice President, Microsoft Research
 
As senior vice president, Richard (Rick) F. Rashid oversees worldwide operations for Microsoft Research, an organization encompassing more than 850 researchers across six labs worldwide. Under Rashid's leadership, Microsoft Research conducts both basic and applied research across disciplines that include algorithms and theory; human-computer interaction; machine learning; multimedia and graphics; search; security; social computing; and systems, architecture, mobility and networking. His team collaborates with the world's foremost researchers in academia, industry and government on initiatives to advance the state-of-the-art of computing and to help ensure the future of Microsoft's products.
 
After joining Microsoft in September 1991, Rashid served as director and vice president of the Microsoft Research division and was promoted to his current role in 2000. In his earlier roles, Rashid led research efforts on operating systems, networking and multiprocessors, and authored patents in such areas as data compression, networking and operating systems. He managed projects that catalyzed the development of Microsoft's interactive TV system and also directed Microsoft's first e-commerce group. Rashid was the driving force behind the creation of the team that later developed into Microsoft's Digital Media Division.
 
Before joining Microsoft, Rashid was professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). As a faculty member, he directed the design and implementation of several influential network operating systems and published extensively about computer vision, operating systems, network protocols and communications security. During his tenure, Rashid developed the Mach multiprocessor operating system, which has been influential in the design of modern operating systems and remains at the core of several commercial systems.
 
Rashid's research interests have focused on artificial intelligence, operating systems, networking and multiprocessors. He has participated in the design and implementation of the University of Rochester's Rochester Intelligent Gateway operating system, the Rochester Virtual Terminal Management System, the CMU Distributed Sensor Network Testbed, and CMU's SPICE distributed personal computing environment. He also co-developed of one of the earliest networked computer games, "Alto Trek," during the mid-1970s.
 
Rashid was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2003 and presented with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Emanuel R. Piore Award and the SIGOPS Hall of Fame Award in 2008. He was also inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2008. In addition, Rashid is a member of the National Science Foundation Computer Directorate Advisory Committee and a past member of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency UNIX Steering Committee and the Computer Science Network Executive Committee. He is also a former chairman of the Association for Computing Machinery Software System Awards Committee.
 
Rashid received master of science (1977) and doctoral (1980) degrees in computer science from the University of Rochester. He graduated with honors in mathematics and comparative literature from Stanford University in 1974.

Dave Gower
Director of Product Lifecycle Management, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Division
 
Based in Redmond, WA, Dave Gower is the Director of Product Lifecycle Management for the Microsoft Interactive Entertainment business division. Dave is responsible for the strategic direction of PLM within Microsoft, as well as system architecture, design and development, deployment, training and maintenance. His responsibilities span all hardware organizations and the associated manufacturing, supply chain and field operations that support Microsoft’s PC hardware business, Xbox gaming console and accessories, Kinect camera systems, Zune MP3 player and Surface computing platform.
 
Prior to joining Microsoft, Dave was responsible for PLM strategy and direction at Lucent Technologies for almost 10 years. One of the early practitioners of PLM, Dave and his team established one of the first implementations with full end-to-end capabilities from CAD to ERP. He subsequently assumed responsibility for PLM efforts spanning over 35 design and manufacturing locations worldwide.
 
Subsequent to Lucent Technologies, Dave was involved in establishing the technical and operational foundations for a number
of start-up ventures spanning field failure analysis, risk analysis and portfolio management.
 
Originally from the U.K., Dave received Bachelor of Science and Master of Philosophy degrees in electrical engineering from University College, London. He moved to the U.S, to take a 1 year contract position with Boeing and somehow never returned.

Bent Jenson is a worldwide capability manager in Intel’s IT Customer Capability Group focused on supporting the CRM needs of Intel’s sales groups. As a global capability manager Bent is responsible for Intel’s sales pipeline including leads, opportunities, and account management processes.
 
Bent has gained more than 20 years high tech sales, marketing, and CRM experience spending 13 of those years at Intel. His Intel responsibilities have included the development of a value added networking products reseller channel, launch and ramp of the Intel Premier Partner program, and development of Intel’s customer relationship management information solutions. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in marketing and German from the University of Utah and works from Intel’s Beaverton, Oregon site.

Adam Brown
Executive Director, Social Media, Global Marketing, Dell
 
Adam Brown is Executive Director, Social Media for Dell. In this role he leads the company’s global activities in online communities as well as strategy around new social media marketing, communications and commerce initiatives.
 
Adam joined Dell in May 2010 after spending four years as Director of the Office of Digital and Social Media at The Coca-Cola Company. There, his teams lead the development and management of the company’s corporate Web sites and blogs, employee portals, search engine activities and social media listening/engagement initiatives.
 
While at Coke, Adam created the company’s first blog, developed its 4R social media strategy (review, respond, record, redirect) and spearheaded the development of the company’s social media guidelines, often seen as a standard for other CPG companies considering their foray into the digital space.
 
Adam joined Coca-Cola in 2006 after spending eight years at global public relations agency Ketchum. While at Ketchum, Adam was Vice President and Director of eKetchum, Ketchum’s digital media development and viral marketing strategy group.
 
During his eight years at Ketchum, Adam helped develop Web sites, intranets and other online communities for some of the world’s most prestigious and respected companies. His work has been the recipient of numerous awards including four PRSA Silver Anvil awards for work for clients Proctor & Gamble, Nokia and Novartis, as well as a National PRSA Best of Show award for Cox Communications.
Previous to Ketchum, Adam was Creative Director at Web development firm What’s Up, Inc, and an Associate Director at advertising and ideation firm BrightHouse.
 
Adam graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Communication, where he majored in Advertising.
