This presentation will explore the Petro technical computing challenges that Apache faced and present the current state solutions delivered by SIS and highlight how Apache has taken advantage of these technologies to: 1) Deliver a single workspace for productivity and petrotechnical applications for each geoscientist, 2) Significantly improve performance for technical users and accelerate application workflows.

Synergy from Silos

Sponsored by Petris - With more than 53,000 employees in 80 countries, Baker Hughes is a top-tier oilfield service company that delivers solutions to help oil and gas operators make the most of their wells and reservoirs. A web-based solution that helps amalgamate the silos of information and presents a common point of access across the enterprise was delivered to fulfill the needs. The Baker Hughes WellData Discovery system was built on the PetrisWINDS Enterprise (PWE) platform. It enables end users to search by attributes and location for wells and the associated operation data from several databases. With the recent product upgrade, the system provides an easy-to-use user interface built with Microsoft Silverlight, ESRI GIS technology and a Petris custom tool bar. It also integrates easily with the SharePoint environment and stores user-specific key search attributes and the geodetic preference. The PWE application has become a powerful tool for Sales & Marketing, Geoscientists and engineers. Key product features, successes and challenges will be shared in this case study. For the enterprise, however, the synergy across the product lines has become crucial for the company's growth and survival in today's challenging business environment. Since each product line is involved in distinct phases of the well life cycle, data acquired by one product line can become a valuable asset to the parts of the company that are involved in other stages of the well life cycle. Finding the collective information about wells and their operation history has thus become a pressing business demand. Many of Baker Hughes' products and services produce large amounts of technical information, which is gathered daily. With dozens of product lines and hundreds of products and services, discovering synergies among data in product-centric database silos was a difficult task.

Chevron: The Emerging Business Case for the Utilization of Identity Federation in the Energy Sector

Sponsored by Covisint - In today's energy world, roughly 77% of employees do not belong to your company. This creates the need for companies to build ad hoc partnerships that share massive amounts of data with workers that reside outside the confines of their organization. What is even more interesting is that these partnerships typically include yesterday’s rivals who are competing for the world's energy reserves. To make these partnerships work requires flexibility, reliability, speed with the highest levels of security as you are allowing business partners seamless access to highly sensitive assets. For years, companies have tried to provide these services on their own with limited success due to the complexity and costs involved ? and with the current flurry of hacking attempts such as the Night Dragon attacks, it has become critical for companies to search out alternative choices to internally provisioning access to their assets.Working with Covisint, Chevron is able to provide a solution that provides significant advantages over the conventional buy-build-implement paradigm. The Chevron extended workforce will be able to plug into production-ready solutions within days or weeks, as opposed to the many months typically required by conventional on-premise solutions. By leveraging the Covisint software-as-a-service (SaaS) model of connectivity, Chevron will only have to maintain a single connection to Covisint in order to provide access to their internal resources for select customers, partners and joint ventures. This solution leverages the Microsoft ADFS as the federation gateway, with Microsoft AD being the authoritative source for Chevron identities. The Microsoft Card Management solution is also in play for 2-factor authentication, which will eventually provide two-way access for Chevron employees.

Workforce Enablement at Chevron in a Mobile World

Sponsored by Invensys - This session looks at two questions many operating company managers ask themselves daily: How can I better enable my front line workers? and how can I empower these employees have the right knowledge at the point of incident to take action if possible and/or ensure the responsible employee can easily follow up on the duties and corrective actions? All organizations train their people and most spend significant money doing so. Ninety percent of the respondents to a recent McKinsey Quarterly survey said building capabilities was a top 10 priority for their organizations. In addition, the study stated only 25 percent of the companies surveyed said their training programs were effective at improving performance measurably and only eight percent track a program's return on investment. This session will highlight approaches that go beyond traditional training that can help to overcome the crossfire industry faces with workforce turnover and increasing regulatory compliance. The key takeaways from the session will be the sharing of several new approaches to help achieve safer and more competitive operations.Chevron has entered a new phase of their journey to exploit the new mobile and workflow technologies in the Microsoft stack. Now that optimal data collection and best practices are consistently being executed through operational routine duties … the new path forward is one that will automate procedural compliance through new technologies such as procedures on demand, dynamic procedures and mobile learning on demand (media). If you have procedures in MS Word ... you will not want to miss this presentation and demonstration.

The Smart Grid analogy - Improving Pipeline Reliability Together with NiSource GT&S

Sponsored by OSIsoft - On its way from 'wellhead to burner tip' a cubic foot of methane passes through a diverse physical infrastructure of pipes, compressors, valves, meters and other assets. This system is operated by different entities that span the delivery chain from upstream, to transmission, to storage, and finally distribution. As each unit of natural gas crosses boundaries, moving from one silo of the transportation system to another, it leaves its operational "footprint" behind in the form of data. This data and the knowledge derived from it are priceless corporate assets. Ensuring that this data is collected, retained, and made accessible so employees and business applications can transform it into operational improvement is at the core of the NiSource Gas Transmission & Storage reliability and modernization program. While shale dynamics and gas industry regulations are driving the need for this new program, NiSource sees this work as an opportunity to ask 'While we're at it, what else can we do better as an operating company? As an industry, how can we take this to the next level? Can a standard methodology for exchanging real time operating data across industry boundaries and between stakeholders improve gas industry performance?' In this presentation Michael Graves, IT Director at NiSource Gas Transmission & Storage will address these topics and discuss where the gas industry has been, challenges for the future, and how NGT&S is building out reliable operations to ensure long term success.

Growing Pains: The Oasis Petroleum Transformation from "Asset Management by Spreadsheet" to SharePoint 2010

Sponsored by Stonebridge - In the fast paced world of oil exploration and production, timely access to critical data drives the path to success. The rapid and meteoric rise of Oasis Petroleum from an start up oil and gas company to a public traded entity strained many of the internal processes which had originally been developed for a much smaller operation. While at one point, the processes had been "good enough"; they were now an inhibitor to growth. Case in point: well data management.Oasis had implemented manual processes and systems for managing information about its wells - the core assets around which the business runs. While these processes were sufficient for a smaller company, they would not facilitate the desired growth. Management of well data was essentially a collection of disparate activities, generating questions of data integrity and accuracy. The process offered a disjointed, cumbersome means of delivering the right information to the right people - from the executive office to the field, from regulatory to land, from accounting to operations. Through a methodical approach, Oasis devised a new standard for information management consistent with the company it had become. By leveraging the inherent strength of the SharePoint 2010 collaborative platform, Oasis began a series of incremental improvements in order to manage well information more effectively. These changes improved access for the wide variety of business users and streamlined the process of acquiring knowledge regarding the company's wells. By making these changes and developing this foundation, Oasis is saving costs and reducing risks posed by bad or untimely data.As it looks toward the future, Oasis intends to build upon its information management success by SharePoint-enabling a number of other key processes, including document management, workflow, and business intelligence. This session will describe the SharePoint transformation under way at Oasis and share key insights and lessons learned in utilizing SharePoint as a collaborative engine.

Shell and the Smart Solution Platform: What are the Benefits?

Sponsored by Siemens - The Smart Solutions Platform (SSP) is a strategic initiative to accelerate development and delivery of business solutions, sustain realized benefits, and provide faster internal and external innovation in Smart Solutions. Smart Solutions are the business applications solely focused on the business logic and are built on top of the SSP. Therefore, the SSP is a key enabler for Upstream Production, Mining and Downstream Manufacturing and be extended to Supply and Retail Domains. This SSP is what we call an Foundation layer consisting of IT services such as Complex Event Processing (CEP), Event and Alarm Management, Calculation & Modeling engines, Visualisation & Reporting services, Data models, etc.One of the core components of the SSP is the Data Services Layer (DSL) and, in case of SSP, Siemens XHQ is the key element here. This means that all relevant (hundreds of) data sources globally are connected to the DSL and therefore all IT services requiring data connect as well to this DSL. Another key component of Siemens XHQ is the semantic model, where, based on the Shell Enterprise Data Model, the complete data structure of all connected data sources is kept in a way easily understandable to all users in the field. This also for easy global reporting and analytics.
