Federated Search Connectors
Federated Search Connectors allow your Microsoft enterprise search solution to pass
search queries to a target system and accept and display results returned from that
system. Federated Search Connectors are the fastest and easiest way to connect to
your information sources.
Microsoft’s Federated Search Connectors are based on the Open Search standard, making
it easy for you to configure federated searches for a wide variety of existing information
services that exist today. The configuration data for a Federated Search Connector
can be packaged and reused as a Federated Location Definition (.FLD) file.
Download Sample Connectors
Download a package of sample Federated Location Definition files. Importing these
definition files allows you to seamlessly federate your searches to several online
services, including:
-
News:
Live.com News,
Yahoo News,
Google News,
Wired,
The Register
-
Information Resources:
MSDN,
TechNet,
Wikipedia,
Encyclopedia Britannica,
Yahoo
-
Media:
Flickr,
Yahoo Images,
YouTube,
PodScope
-
Blogs:
Technorati,
Google Blog Search
To use one of these federated locations in your enterprise search solution, follow
these steps:
- Download the Federated Location Definition (.FLD) file for the desired federated
location above (right click on the link and hit Save Target As...).
- Import the file into your search solution by going to your Search Administration
page, click on Federated Locations, and click Import Location.
- Connect the federated location to an end user results page by adding a Federated
Results Web Part or Top Federated Results Web Part and configuring them to connect
to your federated location.
You can find more information about importing and using federated locations in the
"Federated Results from other locations" article on your Search Administration page.
You can also discuss federation in Search Server in our
discussion groups.
