Advocacy & Partnerships

Microsoft works with leading organizations to extend the positive impact of technology on the environment. At the corporate level, we are collaborating with a number of respected governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including the Clinton Foundation, Climate Savers Computing Initative, European Environmental Agency, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ENERGY STAR, The Green Grid, and the United Nations.

  • Clinton Foundation

    Microsoft is in a long-term partnership with the Clinton Foundation to develop a suite of technology tools that will enable cities to accurately monitor, compare, and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Climate Savers Computing Initiative

    In 2007, Microsoft collaborated with a number of well-known companies and organizations to launch the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI). Through CSCI, Microsoft and its partners offer a unified voice on the importance of sustainable computer use.

  • ENERGY STAR: Low Carbon IT Campaign

    The ENERGY STAR Low Carbon IT Campaign is a nationwide effort in the United States to assist and recognize organizations for reducing the energy consumed by their computers and monitors. In 2008, Microsoft endorsed the campaign as a charter participant.

  • European Environment Agency

    In 2008, Microsoft embarked on a pioneering five-year alliance with the European Environment Agency to deliver real-time environmental information to more than 500 million Europeans—through the planned Global Observatory for Environmental Change.

  • Green Grid

    In 2007, a group of influential companies including Microsoft came together in search of ways to minimize the environmental impact of business enterprise information technology (IT). The result was The Green Grid, a consortium of IT companies that seek to reduce power consumption in data centers worldwide.

  • GridWise Alliance

    In 2008, Microsoft joined the GridWise™ Alliance, a collaborative venture between private industry and the U.S. Department of Energy. The organization's goal is to transform and modernize the nation's electrical power system so that energy can be generated, distributed and consumed more efficiently, cost effectively and environmentally friendly.

  • Sustainable Packaging Coalition

    The Sustainable Packaging Coalition is an industry working group inspired by cradle to cradle principles and dedicated to transforming packaging into a system that encourages economic prosperity and a sustainable flow of materials. Microsoft is on the executive committee of the coalition to advocate and communicate a positive, robust environmental vision for packaging.

  • United Nations Environment Programme

    (UNEP)

    UNEP and Microsoft are leveraging technology to address the environmental issues of the 21st century, plan for sustainable development, and provide access to environmental data and information.

  • United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

    In July 2006, UNIDO and Microsoft signed a strategic partnership to harness the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to promote sustainable industrialization as a means of improving livelihoods in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
