Energy-Smart Buildings

Through a pilot program and white paper, Microsoft is sharing knowledge of how organizations can use IT successfully to improve the bottom line and reduce environmental impacts. Many organizations do not need to retrofit buildings in order to realize significant energy savings and Microsoft has shown that smart buildings are accessible and affordable for any organization.

Reducing and Managing Computer Energy Consumption

To help us meet our environmental goals, Microsoft IT has deployed System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3 and greater power management controls to 165,000 desktop and laptop computers.

The result was a 27 percent drop in the amount of power used by managed desktop computers, as well as a projected cost savings of $12 to $14 per computer, per year.

Reducing Travel and Carbon With Unified Communications

Microsoft’s Unified Communications (UC) streamlines communications and collaboration. By reducing the need for business travel and commuting, our UC solutions improve business outcomes, lower costs and enhance environmental sustainability. Last year alone, UC enabled us to save 17,000 metric tons of CO2 and reduced our travel costs $92 million.
