Microsoft Equipt has been discontinued

To help address the growing need for essential PC protection, Microsoft announced in 2008 that it would be offering a new no-cost anti-malware-focused security solution and would discontinue Windows Live OneCare. As a result of this new offering and the discontinuation of OneCare, Microsoft Equipt, which included a subscription to OneCare, has been discontinued.

If you purchased an unused copy of Equipt in the last 45 days from an authorized seller, see the FAQ for how to request your refund. Microsoft has sole discretion in determining customers' eligibility to receive the refund, and you may be required to provide proof of purchase.

How does the Microsoft Equipt discontinuation affect me?
If you already installed Microsoft Equipt, you will still be able to open and view existing Office documents, but you will not be able to create or edit Office documents, and OneCare will no longer be actively helping to protect your PC. You will no longer be able to install Microsoft Equipt.

Can I request a refund?
If you purchased an unused copy of Microsoft Equipt in the last 45 days from an authorized seller (Circuit City or its liquidators, or DSG Plc Group of Companies, or Microsoft ExpertZone), you can request a refund through the 45-Day Money Back Guarantee Program. Microsoft has sole discretion in determining customers' eligibility to receive a refund, and you may be required to provide proof of purchase.

To request a refund, fax the following information to 1-510-225-2555. You must include all of this information in order for your refund request to be processed:

  1. Mark your fax as “Attention: Equipt refund program.”
  2. Include a copy of your original sales receipt, credit card statement, or canceled check.
  3. Include your Equipt product key. This is the 25-character combination of letters and numbers that is located on the yellow sticker inside the Microsoft Equipt CD case. See also How do I find my product key?
  4. Include your complete contact information, including full name, street address (sorry, no PO boxes), city, state, ZIP or postal code, country, telephone number, and e-mail address.
  5. Indicate the name and location of the retailer from which you purchased the product.
  6. Please allow four to six weeks after you submit your refund request for delivery of the refund check.

If you purchased Equipt from an unauthorized seller, purchased a used copy, or purchased a promotional copy of Equipt, you are not eligible for a refund. Please contact the seller who sold you this copy of Equipt. Corporations are not eligible for this offer. This offer is only available in the United States and the United Kingdom. If you purchased Equipt more than 45 days ago, you are no longer eligible for a refund.

How do I find my product key?
The product key is included with the Microsoft Equipt CD. It is located on a sticker found on the inside of the Microsoft Equipt CD case. Look for a 25-character combination of letters and numbers that looks like this:

How soon will I receive my refund?

Can I get my refund in a different currency than my original purchase?
Refunds will be given only in USD or GBP. The currency depends on the location of the retailer where you purchased Microsoft Equipt. If it was purchased from a retailer in the United States, the refund will be in USD. If it was purchased from a retailer in the United Kingdom, it will be in GBP.

When should I uninstall Microsoft Equipt?
We recommend that you uninstall Microsoft Equipt as soon as possible.

If I do not uninstall Microsoft Equipt, what happens to the programs on my computer?
We recommend that you uninstall Microsoft Equipt as soon as possible. If you do not uninstall Microsoft Equipt, you will be able to read Microsoft Office documents, but you will not be able to edit or create new documents. In addition, your computer will no longer be protected by OneCare.

Why can’t I install Microsoft Equipt?
Microsoft Equipt is discontinued and can no longer be installed.

If I uninstall Microsoft Equipt, what happens to Microsoft Office or other programs that I had before I installed Microsoft Equipt?
Microsoft Equipt includes many programs and services, such as Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Windows Live OneCare, and more. If you had installed one of those programs on your computer before you installed Microsoft Equipt, and you then removed Microsoft Equipt from your computer, you must reinstall the programs to use them again. If you created documents on your computer using the programs in Microsoft Equipt, those documents are not deleted.

Why did Microsoft Office and Windows Live OneCare stop working?
Microsoft Equipt has been discontinued. If you installed Microsoft Equipt, you will still be able to view existing Office documents, but you will not be able to create or edit Office documents, and OneCare will no longer be actively helping to protect your PC.
