Be Sure it's Legal

Office XP Be Sure it's Legal

The first step to purchasing the Office XP suite - make sure you're getting the real thing!

Since the launch of the edge-to-edge hologram on retail versions of Windows 2000 CD-ROMs in February 2000, Microsoft has expanded the hologram to retail versions of its Office 2000 and Windows Me products. The edge-to-edge hologram has been a highly successful anti-counterfeiting feature, with no counterfeiters to date being able to replicate the anti-counterfeiting technology. In light of the success of the edge-to-edge hologram, Microsoft has expanded the anti-counterfeiting technology to the latest version of Office - Office XP.

Office XP Professional Box
Every retail copy of Office XP comes in a colourful box. Look for the Certificate of Authenticity on the top of the box.

Below is a picture of the Certificate of Authenticity label. The recycle symbol (two arrows in a circle) is heat sensitive and changes from dark green to light green when touched or heated.

OEM and retail CD-ROM
The edge-to-edge hologram appears on the surface of the CD-ROM. It displays the product name and product-specific holographic images from the hub to the outer edge of the disc. The edge-to-edge holograms are unique on each product, making them particularly difficult to counterfeit. See all edge-to-edge holograms at www.microsoft.com/piracy.

When tilted in the light, the text changes
from 'Microsoft' to 'Genuine'.

Certificate of Authenticity

OEM version
Office XP always comes with a Certificate of Authenticity firmly affixed to the CD-ROM jewelcase when supplied with your new PC. Look for the Certificate with these security features:

  • Heat sensitive strip - when rubbed, the word 'Genuine' appears.
  • The full product name and version appear on the Certificate
