Exchange Server 2007 Licensing Frequently Asked Questions

Published: November 30, 2006

Q.What are the Exchange Server 2007 licensing options?
A.

Customers can choose to purchase the Microsoft Exchange Enterprise Client Access License (CAL) or the Exchange Standard CAL. The Exchange Enterprise CAL is sold as an add-on to the Exchange Standard CAL. Two server editions will continue to be offered: Exchange Server Enterprise Edition and Exchange Server Standard Edition. Either CAL can be run against either server edition.

Q.What do I get with the Exchange Enterprise CAL versus the Exchange Standard CAL?
A.

The Microsoft Exchange Enterprise Client Access License (CAL) is an add-on to the Exchange Standard CAL. It includes Unified Messaging and advanced compliance. With the Exchange Enterprise CAL software assurance (SA), the customer can get Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server and Microsoft Exchange Hosted Filtering (EHF) for onsite and hosted antivirus and antispam protection. The Exchange Standard CAL delivers advancements that reduce the cost and complexity of the messaging system by giving IT administrators the messaging protection their company demands, the anywhere access their end users want, and the reliability they need.

Q.Can an organization buy Exchange Enterprise CALs for a subset of users in the organization?
A.

Yes. An organization can deploy different Client Access Licenses (CALs) for different end-user needs.

Q.How will Exchange Server 2007 be priced? Will there be a price increase?
A.

No. There will not be a price increase. Pricing for Microsoft Exchange Standard and Enterprise Servers will not change with Exchange Server 2007. Additionally, the Exchange Standard Client Access License (CAL) price will be the same as the current Exchange CAL price. The Exchange Standard Server price is $699, and the Exchange Enterprise Server price is $3,999 (both prices are estimated retail price Open Value). These are estimates only. Costs for customers may vary as reseller prices vary.

Microsoft Open License is a Volume Licensing program for small to mid-sized organizations that have fewer than 250 desktop PCs. The program provides a simple, flexible, and cost-effective way to acquire the latest Microsoft technology to meet your organization's needs and procurement procedures.

Q.What will the Exchange Standard CAL cost?
A.

There will be no price increase for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Standard Client Access License (CAL). Costs for customers may vary as reseller prices vary.

Q.How much does the Exchange Enterprise CAL cost?
A.

Costs for customers may vary as reseller prices vary.

Q.What if I have Microsoft Software Assurance?
A.

Customers with Software Assurance (SA) agreements on their Client Access Licenses (CALs) will receive the Microsoft Exchange Standard CAL that includes new features and improvements for Exchange Server 2007. Q.Can I buy the Exchange Enterprise CAL without Software Assurance?
A.

A.

Yes. Customers will still be required to purchase the Microsoft Exchange Standard Client Access License (CAL) for access to e-mail, shared calendars, and Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access.

Q.Are there any additional costs that I will need to incur to take advantage of features like Unified Messaging?
A.

Unified Messaging is available in the Microsoft Exchange Enterprise Client Access License (CAL), an add-on license to the Exchange Standard CAL. Customers who take advantage of Unified Messaging in Exchange Server 2007 may need to purchase a gateway product to work with their existing Private Branch Exchange (PBX) solution, if they have a traditional PBX. In this case, the customer would also have to purchase the add-on license to the Exchange Standard CAL. With the Exchange Enterprise CAL, Unified Messaging is a part of this license and is not available on a stand-alone basis.

Q.If I purchase the Exchange Enterprise CAL, do I get unlimited service updates for Forefront Security for Exchange Server and/or Exchange Hosted Filtering?
A.

Services like Microsoft Exchange Hosted Filtering (EHF) and Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server require ongoing updates to remain beneficial. Antivirus/antispam (AV/AS) solutions are typically sold as an annual service. The ongoing annual cost of the Enterprise Client Access License (CAL) includes the AV/AS service updates as well as the typical Software Assurance (SA) that provides the same benefits that come with our software offerings.

Q.Can a customer purchase on-premise or hosted antispam for some of its users?
A.

No. If a customer chooses to deploy either onsite or hosted antispam, the customer must purchase rights to Microsoft Exchange Hosted Filtering (EHF) or Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server for everyone in the organization.

Q.Will Exchange Server still offer an External Connector license in 2007?
A.
