Microsoft Expression Encoder 2 Service Pack 1 Features

Expression Encoder 2 Service Pack 1 contains enhancements in several areas as well as bug fixes. For complete information on the changes, please refer to the release notes.

Encoding Enhancements

H.264 Encoding for Devices

New in Service Pack 1 is our support for H.264/AAC encoding. In addition to VC-1 profiles, we have introduced two new encoding profiles aimed at creating podcasts for media devices.

IIS Smooth Streaming

Expression Encoder 2 Service Pack 1 includes encoding support and Silverlight media player support for Smooth Streaming. Smooth Streaming is a new extension for Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, which enables adaptive streaming of media to Silverlight clients via HTTP.

Using Expression Encoder, you can encode several quality levels of a specific piece of content, choose to add Smooth Streaming specific code to one of Expression Encoder’s Silverlight templates and publish all of the media content and the Silverlight player directly to a Smooth Streaming-enabled IIS server without having to write any code on the client or server.

Processing Enhancements

A/B Compare Enhancements

Service Pack 1 introduces two new visual comparison modes to better discern differences between original and encoded videos:

Bands mode enable you to visually differentiate multiple segments of the video frame.

Difference mode shows luminance map differences to help distinguish quality loss.

Audio Overlay

You now have the ability to add an audio overlay track. An audio overlay is an audio file that is played over or instead of the video audio file. You can adjust the volume, duration and fade in/out parameters to get the desired result. Audio overlays can also be used to combine separate video and audio source files into a combined audio/video output.

Production and Publishing

Silverlight 2 Player Templates

Expression Encoder 2 Service Pack 1 adds six new player templates that provide a quick and easy way to create Silverlight 2 video experiences. These new templates take advantage of rich new functionality in Silverlight 2, and share a new core media playback custom control. It is completely skinnable in Expression Blend and supports Silverlight 2 controls, Visual State Manager, adaptive layout, playlist support and byte-range seeking for an enhanced playhead seeking experience.

WebDAV Publishing

Service Pack 1 includes a WebDAV publishing plug-in that allows you to publish directly to a remote server that supports the Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol (WebDAV). The WebDAV publishing plug-in works with any WebDAV-enabled server including Windows Server 2003 or 2008 running Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 or 7.0.
