Windows Live Platform Discussion with Koji Kato and Danny Thorpe

Windows Live is best known as a collection of end-user offerings – like Messenger, Spaces, Search, Hotmail and a whole bunch more. It’s also in the process of evolving into a platform. Koji Kato and Danny Thorpe, from the Windows Live platform team, discuss their views on internet software and what it means to “componentize” Windows Live.

Koji sets some context by drawing an analogy to Office (00:02:27), and its early evolution from a set of end-user targeted apps to a set of components. Beta versions of the Windows Live Contacts Control and Spaces Photo Control (described by Danny around 00:11:37) represent some of the initial Windows Live components, and include customization plans (00:21:21), international/localization support (00:19:13), and support for multiple browsers (00:18:15).

Koji Kato is a Group Program Manager on the Windows Live platform team.

Danny Thorpe is Architect on the Windows Live platform team.

The interview was conducted by Catherine Heller, Windows Live Technical Evangelist (who you may remember from her former Windows Vista evangelism days).
And in case you didn’t catch the URL at the end (00:24:11), http://dev.live.com is the source for all things developer-related around Windows Live!

So, we met up with team leader Nils Pohlman, QnA program manager Betsy Aoki, and development lead Ed Harris for a good old fashioned Channel 9 Q 'n A on Windows Live QnA.

Betsy mentions her QnA gadget.
The Windows Live Contacts gadget is a client-side browser JavaScript object that enables visitors to use their Windows Live contacts with your Web site. Instead of typing a shipping address into a shopping cart form, for example, the user could simply select one of their Windows Live contacts from the contact gadget. The user saves time and effort in completing the order, and you gain the benefits of an address book for your Web site without having to implement, maintain, and provision data storage and management UI on your servers. The user maintains control of their personal contacts data, while you focus on providing services with data the user gives you.

Danny Thorpe is a senior program manager and architect in the Windows Live Platform group at Microsoft. Danny's blog link is http://blogs.msdn.com/dthorpe/. The Windows Live Contacts gadget can be found at http://dev.live.com/contactsgadget/.

It seems we missed some features in our first video on Windows Live Mail Desktop, most notably "Active Search". I headed back to Bryan Starbuck's office to chat with him and Oji Udezue about how this feature integrates search right into your email client (and provides you with a way to turn off an advertisement as well!).

Accruent’s Next Generation Real Estate Management Tool

For real estate managers at large retail chains the expiration of a store lease triggers a complex evaluation of the store. How is that store performing relative to other locations? Are there competitors close by? Have the demographics of the neighborhood changed significantly since the store opened? Does the merchandise of the store fit the clientele? How many potential customers live within a five minute drive of the store? To answer these questions they need data from many different sources (census data, sales data, geographic data, etc.), but even more importantly they need a tool that helps them stitch together the data and visualize it in a way that makes it intuitive work to with and actionable. In this video we take a look at how the folks atAccruent are tackling this problem by overlaying WPF 3D visualizations on maps provided by Windows Live’s Virtual Earth Services. We also look at how their tool manages the evaluation process using Microsoft Office Sharepoint Services and Windows Workflow Foundation and integrates with Outlook and the other Office 2007 applications to provide a seamless experience.

Get more info about the technologies used in this video here.

We interrupt VISTA week for this very important announcement from Windows Messenger.

Windows Live Messenger is launching a revolutionary initiative to give back. I’m excited to let you know that today in the U.S. they launched the “i'm Initiative,” which connects users of Windows Live Messenger with nine of the world’s most significant causes and the leading non-profit organizations associated with them.

The more conversations customers have, the more money will go toward these urgent social issues. Microsoft will share a portion of the program’s advertising revenue with the user’s chosen organization, and will guarantee that each organization receives a minimum of $100,000 in donations during the first year of the program.

There is no upper limit, so greater usage can increase the contributions. It's a brilliant idea. Watch this video and sign up at im.live.com so you can start making a difference RIGHT NOW.

Photosynth and Seadragon offer a glimpse at the next great UI

If you’ve seen Minority Report and watched with glee as Tom Cruise effortlessly navigates piles of media with lightning speed using only his hands, you’ll immediately recognize Seadragon. Blaise Aguera y Arcas and the team at Windows Live Labs have created an engine for managing large collections of images effortlessly. Through their own special brand of hot sauce, the team has been able to build software that loads only the pieces of large images that it needs at any moment in time. This breakthrough allows the user to experience their collections of images instantly. By adding Photosynth to the recipe, the team is able to stitch images together and determine the three dimensional space where pictures were taken.

When the power of Seadragon and Photosynth are combined with images from many different sources, the potential applications become very exciting. Fusing the photos of a particular location taken by multiple people, geo-data can be learned as opposed to manually entered. Now if only we could merge these technologies with some gloves with glowing fingers…

Questions answered by likeminded humans on Windows Live

Everyone has their favorite search engine, and we've all become very well trained on how to craft our questions in order to find the answers we're looking for. Wouldn't it be nice if a degree in linguistics wasn't necessary to get simple questions answered? Windows Live QnA has launched with the goal of simplifying the question and answer equation. Ask a question like "Why is Tina so much cooler then Laura?" and throngs of fellow users can contribute their own answers, as well as vote to select the best answer to your query. See, simplicity people. It doesn't get much better then that. More over on the Live QnA blog.

Alaire. This latest Microsoft tool for bloggers has lit a fire over at Techmeme, and we're certainly very excited to start using it at 10.

Live Writer is being built to play nice with just about everyone's blogging platform, though this first beta focuses on compatibility with Live Spaces, Blogger, LiveJournal, Typepad, and Wordpress (as if that list doesn't already have you covered). Go grab the Live Writer download now and help bring blogging out of the in-browser dark ages.
Windows Live Spaces goes "Live"

MSN Spaces has evolved and will now be known as Windows Live Spaces. This is not just a simple name change but a feature packed update, including gadgets, games, photos, feeds and a friends list. Everything is customizable to your heart’s desire. So even though the friends list is based on your contacts in Windows Live Messenger, you can decide whether your mistress shows in your list for the world to see. That’s just one of the options Mike Torres is happy to use and demo for us. We also setup an on10 Live Space, but sadly we have no friends. Help us out by adding on10net@hotmail.com to your Messenger list; you never know who you'll end up chatting with.
