WOWZAPP

The whole week is going to be filled with some amazing events.. one bigger, cooler and more fantastic than the other. If you’re not prepared for some mind-blowing awesomness, look away.. but you look like the kind of crazy spirit who would enjoy this..so I give you.. the agenda!

The WOWZAPP events are also a great way for you to learn how to use your existing skills from Windows Phone or HTML5 when creating apps for the new Windows platform.

7.11. Faculty Day

The Faculty Day will be organized at Aalto Design Factory on the 7th of November. During the event you’ll hear how you can use free Microsoft services to acquire curriculum materials for your course through Faculty Connection. So for example when you get to run that great Windows Phone course, you can use pre-made curriculum materials rather than writing everything from scratch!

We’ll also discuss how we can help motivate our students through competitions and how to ensure our students are employed after graduation. You’ll hear about our Student Partner programs and from Microsoft partners what are they looking for in graduates and what kind of training programs they have out there. As you know certifications are a great way to ensure your students’ knowledge is up to date and recognized amongst employers.

The Windows-seminar is open for everyone. During the event we’ll get familiar with the new platform, devices and tools. We’ll talk about development and the similarities between Windows 8 and Windows Phone and the differences in these. We’ll also have some amazing demos from Microsoft, Nokia and partners that will blow your mind!

Andrew Parsons
Senior Academic Technical Evangelist at Microsoft

Andrew Parsons has been an Academic Evangelist for Microsoft for over four years. He has spent time in Australia and the US and now looks after Windows 8 outreach to student developers worldwide. He also enjoys his role as the Games Captain for Imagine Cup. Before Microsoft, Andrew spent 18 years in the IT industry as a developer, designer and journalist.

 

Drazen Dodik
Windows Phone Evangelist at Microsoft

Drazen is a oh so jolly evangelist at Microsoft working mostly with Windows Phone, students and all things cool! He’s been working as a software developer and trainer for Windows Phone previously.

Currently Drazen runs around talking to some of the best students and developers Finland and hearing their kickass ideas! “Spreading the Microsoft love, that’s why I do baby”

 

Jukka Wallasvaara
Windows 8 Evangelist at Microsoft

Jukka… or better known as “Waldo” is a Technical Evangelist for Windows 8 in Finland and spends his time traveling around Finland and helping Finnish developers and brands create their amazing app on the Windows platform.

 

Jacqueline Russell
WE Next Generation Audience Evangelist at Microsoft

Jacqueline Russell focuses on the Student and Startup ecosystem in Western Europe – helping the Next Generation of technologists innovate on the Microsoft Platform. She has held various positions during her 7-year tenure at Microsoft including product management for Microsoft’s Developer Tools and SharePoint. She is passionate about how Microsoft’s products and programs can help people realize their dreams – to build a business, to launch a career in IT, to turn an idea into an app, to become the next Bill Gates! Jacqueline currently lives in London where she enjoys getting lost riding double-decker buses in circles around the city with her husband and 2 small children.

 

Arkady Retik
Principal Program Manager at Microsoft

A technology professional, dynamic, proactive and efficient program manager, with a proven ability for strategic thinking, innovation, and leadership, acquired during more than 20 years of experience in higher education, advance research, software development, and project management. Known for being self-directed, analytical thinker and problem solver with a capacity to acquire expertise in new technologies, to clearly communicate and build strong personal and business relationships, and to deliver collaborative projects by leveraging a unique skill set across multiple disciplines.

 

Jeff Burtoft
HTML5 Evangelist at Microsoft

Jeff Burtoft is as an HTML5 Evangelist for Microsoft where he has the pleasure of serving the HTML5 community every day. Jeff Recently co-authored his first book entitled HTML5 Hacks (O’Reilly Media) and is a founding blogger at html5hacks.com. Being in the Web Development community for over 10 years, his work experience varies from positions like "web master" for the Department of Defense to Lead Front End Engineer for a fortune 500 company.

Jeff is a huge proponent of web standards, and loves all programing languages, as long as they are JavaScript. Jeff lives in Bellevue, WA with his wife and three children. In his free time, he enjoys writing Apps and getting beat by a 6 year old in video games.

 

Peter Dwersteg
Windows 8 Evangelist at Microsoft

Peter Dwersteg is a Windows 8 Evangelist at Microsoft. He is a graduate of the University of Washington, and has previously worked in computer science education at the university level, as well as working in Storage and File Systems for Windows 8. In his free time he enjoys soccer and living all the adventures life can offer.

 

Kimo Boissonnier
CEO of Tuliotus
Project Manager - Student Projects in Nokia Student Innovation Lab

Kimo Boissonnier started to work with mobile games as a student in Nokia in 1998 and has since then actively practiced game design and programming. A real geek with a passion of gadgets, working with embedded systems and most importantly teaching all aspect of game development to the younger generation.

Now on his new quest to release his first commercial title, Haunted: Dungeons of Herwood.

 

Anna Kankainen
Junior Consultant at User Experience

Anna is a specialist in user experience and user research. She is especially interested in user-centered design throughout the product lifecycle, as well as new methods, which lead to a deeper understanding of the user experience. Besides working, she is finalizing her diploma work in Aalto University Usability School, which applies methods from various disciplines, like Industrial Design, Strategic Product Design and Cognitive Science.

Anna has a diverse expertise in user research and user experience both from her career (jobs for example in Kela, The Social Insurance Institution of Finland and User Intelligence) and her studies. She is in her element while working with users, and is able to find the most essential issues for product development through research. In her spare time you cannot stop Anna to sing even while walking her dogs.

Jarno Montonen
Software Developer at Futurice Oy

Jarno is an IT-graduate from Jyväskylä University with experience on app, game, and service development. He has a background on some amazing stuff, such as Web Tiles, Dawn of Fantasy and being an ArcticMSP. Recently, Jarno has been concentrating on .NET development, reading a book on investing, loosing his two cents on Nokia stock and doing-a-lot-of-sports-next-week(TM).

 

Karl Ots
Technical Consultant at Symbio

Karl Ots believes that smart mobile devices and great user experiences will make the world a better place. He applies that passion to his work as a technical consultant on latest Microsoft technologies at Symbio. With over 5 years’ experience on software and mobile industry, Karl is a Microsoft Student Partner Lead, has published several international papers and holds a patent. Teemu Tapanila
Guru at AppCampus

Teemu Tapanila, Guru of AppCampus, is helping chosen developers to create Windows Phone applications. He’s also spreading the AppCampus message to developers around the world. Teemu is also working as board member of Aalto entrepreneurship society and leading Windows Phone Aalto Community. He has extensive experience from Microsoft technologies including Windows Azure, Windows Phone and Windows 8.

 

Sakari Niiniskorpi
Software Developer at Bank of Finland

Sakari is a 24 year old software Software Developer at the Bank of Finland and a part-time teacher in Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. Side by side with his works he’s also finishing his international engineering degree of Information Technology. With his student role he’s also taking part in the MSP program, building a MS Tech Club to Leppävaara campus and works as student representative in the IT and Media sector. On his free time Sakari takes care of his own company and handle tenant committee things as the chairman. Also he’s a proud Microsoft supporter and evangelist

 

Arturo Toledo
Architect

Arturo Toledo is an Architect. He runs a boutique design studio attending clients in the United States, Europe and Asia. His work explores the convergence of human arts and science to give shape to an ever evolving design practice. With a particular commitment towards design education, Arturo is permanently engaged with the international design and development communities and often travels the world to exchange ideas about design with other designers and developers. Prior to his current venture, Arturo worked for Microsoft in Redmond for 7 years driving design evangelism.

 

Alejandro Toledo
Experience Program Manager and Developer

Alejandro Toledo is an Experience Program Manager and Developer. He recently co-founded a boutique design studio along with his brother Arturo, providing experience architecture, user interface design and design education services. Alejandro is also a polyglot (aka language freak) involved in an on going study of multiple languages spoken around the world. With an inquisitive mind Alejandro enjoys spending time with designers and developers helping them produce the best possible apps for Windows and Windows Phone. He gets inspiration and energy from his wife and little daughter.

 

Tinja Lee
Solution Developer at Avanade

Tinja found her passion for technology after realizing how fascinating programming and application development can be. Currently she works for Avanade as a solution developer in MAD lab (Mobile Application Development lab) and is also part of the Avanade school collaboration team. Outside work she’s a passionate gamer, and currently hyping over Battlefield 3 and Resident Evil 6.

 

Antti Kuntsi
Consultant at Avanade

Antti is a software architect, developer and mentor with a long track record in the mobile software industry. He has worked on technology ranging from hardware simulators to developer tools to payment aggregation systems. Keeping close to the cutting edge, Antti is one of the first Windows Phone 8 trainers in the world. In his free time he enjoys telemark, astrophotography (and automation thereof) and anything with microcontrollers.

 

Jarmo Hämäläinen
Manager and Expert at Avanade Finland

Jarmo is an experienced specialist in application design and development. Lately he has created various Windows Phone applications for Nokia. Earlier he has consulted widely different business sectors, e.g. banking, insurance, stock market, health care, GPS mapping and government agencies. He is known for being an analytical problem solver with a capacity to deliver complicated projects. Jarmo has been the main architect in various projects, for instance the ALM solution for for theFinnish Tax Authority which included automated code auditing, version tracking and set-ups from testing to production, as well as design and implementation. Besides the Windows Phone his technical expertise covers for instance VisualStudio, C#, WPF and Silverlight,Team System, IIS and SQLServer. Jarmo is is a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) who has also trained a large number of other professional programmers. In his leasure time he for instance organises Code Camps for the like-minded code-entusiastics and creates demo solutions. Jarmo has 30 years of development experience in total.

 

Chad Voss
UX Designer, Windows Phone

Chad has been a user experience designer and prototyper with Microsoft for the past 4 ½ years focusing primarily on mobile and new product incubation. Before Chad discovered UX at Microsoft, he worked in a broad swath of industries including publishing, 3d animation, toy design, and web development with varying roles in each. He believes that the best designs are elegant from the inside out – that a beautiful exterior is merely the projection of an elegant interior.

 

Jeremy Bowen
UX Designer, Windows Phone

Jeremy is a user experience designer on the Windows Phone. Jeremy joined the Windows Phone design studio after recognizing their unique, authentically-digital approach to design and user experience. Before joining Microsoft, he was a graphic designer for the Seattle Art Museum, creating in-gallery graphics, print materials, websites, and mobile apps. Jeremy studied Music and Graphic Design at Brigham Young University, and believes in creating meaningful, delightful experiences – whether it’s a phone, an app, a book, a brand, an exhibit, or music.

The Windows 8 Developer tools are free of charge and you can download the directly from dev.windows.com You will receive Visual Studio 2012 and Expression Blend for Visual Studio 2012 which enable you to create some kickass Windows 8 apps!

What about Windows 8?

So you need to get a Windows 8 installed on your machine? There are a couple of different options for you:

MSDN-Subscribers: You can download Windows 8 from MSDN if you have an active subscription.

Startups: All BizSpark partners have access to MSDN Subscriptions so just head on over to MSDN to get your own Windows 8!

Students: Your faculty most likely has acquired a DreamSpark/MSDN AA-subscription that will allow you to download Windows 8 for free! Check with if your faculty is listed on www.dreamspark.com or talk with your local IT-department about DreamSpark.
