Northwest Airlines Improves Remote Access with Easy-to-Manage Security Solution

Northwest Airlines (NWA), a major international carrier, wanted to improve security and provide its mobile work force better access to Web-based applications and e-mail. The need to remember multiple passwords and manually log off from shared client devices was a hindrance to employees and presented potential security risks. The company was also using a variety of tools and filters to try to provide secure connectivity, and it needed a solution that was less costly to operate and easier to manage. In response, NWA implemented Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006. With the solution in place, employees now need only a single password to open e-mail and other critical applications, and idle connections close automatically. The company has also reduced IT costs by taking advantage of integrated security, connectivity, and management features.

New Extranet Helps Protect Underwriter Information at RSUI Group and Improves Customer Service

RSUI had previously worked with Intellinet, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, to help develop its messaging infrastructure. The company knew that Intellinet could also help it implement a solution that would provide customers with direct access to policy information. In September 2006, RSUI and Intellinet began to design and test an extranet based on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Security was a top priority, so the team decided to deploy Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006, which is part of the Microsoft Forefront line of business security products.

INHOLLAND University Speeds Information Access by Upgrading Network Security Gateway

INHOLLAND University decided to become an early adopter of Microsoft ISA Server 2006, which provides several new and enhanced features. ISA Server 2006 offers a comprehensive tool set for “publishing,” or providing access to, Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server, as well as extensions to Windows Server 2003 R2 for streamlined security and connectivity. New capabilities include single sign-on for users, more centralized management capabilities, and increased security for Web-based applications.

Warwickshire County Council Improves Internet Security with Integrated, Easy-to-Manage Solution

In April 2006, ICTDS began searching for a new Internet filtering and monitoring system. After extensive research, ICTDS concluded that building an effective solution would require three components: Active Directory Authentication to enable logging; category-based URL filtering to block inappropriate and unknown sites; and client-based monitoring to capture the creation and display of inappropriate content in any application.

The State Palaces, Castles, and Gardens of the Free State of Saxony Enhances Branch Office Productivity and Security with Site-to-Site VPN Connectivity

The IT services company installed ISA Server 2006 on a Fujitsu Siemens server computer running the Windows Server 2003 operating system, and configured the new installation with an existing Cisco ISDN router to terminate the ISDN connections at the headquarters. An integrated ISDN adapter that could transfer data using the maximum eight possible channels runs in every branch location connected to the ISA Server. Herr Otto takes pride in the fact that deploying ISA Server 2006 with ISDN technology was unprecedented. “Something like this hadn’t existed before,” he says.

In August 2006, the two options were both tested in a live GP site environment in collaboration with the relevant GP systems supplier and N3. The first option was to implement a Cisco PIX firewall at each GP site in the borough. The other used Windows Server 2003 running Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006, although initially it was trialed with Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2004.

Cognizant Boosts Internet Access, Productivity with Advanced Proxy Server Technology

In 2006, the Cognizant IT department began looking for ways to enhance the performance of its network to accommodate the company’s rapid growth. Integrated Edge Security Improves Arvato Systems' Network Security and Performance

When Arvato Systems implemented a new messaging system for Bertelsmann in 2004, it also investigated options for advanced network edge security protection. The services provider had installed Exchange Server 2003, and wanted an integrated security solution that would support more secure use of Outlook Web Access and Direct Push Technology. Direct Push is a feature of Exchange Server ActiveSync, which delivers new e-mail messages and other information over the air to mobile devices as soon as the data arrives on the server computer.

Getronics Streamlines Web Portal Access with New Security Solution

To enhance the accessibility and security of the information and applications within its portals, Getronics became an early adopter of Microsoft ISA Server 2006 Enterprise Edition, which runs on the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system. Getronics is using ISA Server 2006 to “publish,” or provide secure access to, its Web portals using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology. SSL is a protocol used to validate the identities of two computers involved in a connection across a public network, and to ensure that the data sent between the two parties cannot be read by anyone else on the network. All network traffic, including the confidential parts of the authentication process, is sent using an encrypted SSL connection called a tunnel that is created between the client and server.
