Why Upgrade

Microsoft Internet Acceleration and Security (ISA) Server 2006 is a security gateway that helps protect IT environments from Internet-based threats, while providing users fast and secure remote access to applications and data. ISA Server 2006 is available in two versions: ISA Server 2006 Standard Edition and ISA Server 2006 Enterprise Edition.

ISA Server 2006 offers the following new and improved features.

ISA Server 2006 offers several wizards that help ensure secure access as well as integrated support.

Outlook Web Access Publishing Wizard

  • Clientless remote access through SSL connections form the core of SSL VPNs.

  • The ISA Server 2006 Outlook Web Access Publishing Wizard walks you through creating a firewall rule and creates the Outlook Web Access SSL connection to your Exchange Server.

  • All network elements can be created in the wizard, and you never need to leave the wizard to create a policy element.

ISA Server 2006 allows you to connect and secure your remote-site branch offices to your corporate headquarters and provide security-enhanced Internet access with the Virtual Private Networking (VPN) Connectivity Wizard.

Branch Office VPN Connectivity Wizard

  • Automatically configures a site-to-site VPN connection between two separate offices.

ISA Server 2006 helps IT managers, network administrators, and information security professionals be more efficient.

Easy-to-use wizards

  • Configuration wizard for publishing Windows SharePoint Services, Exchange, and general Web sites.

  • Branch Office VPN Connectivity Wizard configures site-to-site VPN connections.

Hardware-based ISA Server appliances

  • ISA Server 2006 Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition available in preconfigured hardware.

Propagation of enterprise-wide policy

  • Underlying architecture provides for more efficiency.

ISA Server 2006 offers firewall rule wizards, flood resiliency, and enhanced remediation during attack to increase efficiency and enhance protection across your network.

Firewall Rule wizards

  • Includes a new set of rule wizards that makes it easier to create access policy.

  • Create access policy with a sophisticated firewall rule that you can use to configure any required policy element.

  • Create a network object without leaving the rule wizard.

  • Create any network object or relationship within the new wizard.

Flood Resiliency

  • Protects ISA Server 2006 from being permanently unavailable, compromised, or unmanageable during a flooding attack.

Enhanced remediation during attack

  • Provides log throttling, control of memory consumption, and control of pending DNS queries to enhance remediation during attack.

ISA Server 2006 offers several authentication features that improve security and efficiency.

Authentication

  • Authenticate users with built-in Windows, LDAP, RADIUS, or RSA SecurID authentication.

  • Separate front-end and back-end configuration provides for more flexibility and granularity.

  • Supports single sign-on for authentication to Web sites.

  • Apply rules to users or user groups in any namespace.

  • Third-party vendors can use the SDK to extend built-in authentication mechanisms.

Single sign-on

  • Allows users to access a group of published Web sites without being required to authenticate with each Web site.

Forms-based authentication

  • Use forms-based authentication for all published Web sites, not just for Outlook Web Access.

Session management

  • Includes improved control of cookie-based sessions to provide for better security.

Support for LDAP authentication

  • Authenticate to Active Directory without being a member of the domain.

ISA Server 2006 offers link translation features that help prevent external clients from experiencing broken links.

Link translation

  • Includes a link translation feature that you can use to create a dictionary of definitions for internal computer names that map to publicly known names.

  • Implements link translation automatically during Web publishing.

Cross-Array Link Translation

  • Allows links in Web content containing an internal server name to be translated to the public name, even if the Web content is published in a different array.

ISA Server 2006 includes BITS caching, load balancing, compression, and packet prioritization functionality to help increase performance.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) caching

  • Provides the caching mechanism for data received through BITS.

  • Any cache rule that you create can be enabled to cache BITS data.

Web Publishing Load Balancing

  • Automatically balances the request stream coming from a remote user to an array of published servers.

HTTP compression

  • Reduces file size by using algorithms to eliminate redundant data during transmission of HTTP packets.

Diffserv (Quality of Service)

  • Includes a new packet prioritization functionality (provided by the Diffserv Web filter), which scans the URL or domain and assigns a packet priority using Diffserv bits.
