Licensing Overview for Small and Midsized Customers

Forefront Security for Exchange Server integrates with Small Business Server and Microsoft Windows Essentials Server to provide small and midsized businesses comprehensive protection against the latest threats that is easy to maintain and manage. Forefront Security for Exchange Server is sold through Microsoft Volume Licensing.  Since many small businesses may not be familiar with this licensing,  the below information will provide an overview of how to purchase Forefront Security for Exchange Server for use with Small Business Server and Windows Essentials Server.

Small Business Server

Small Business Server 2008 ships with and integrates a 120-day trial version of Forefront Security for Exchange Server that can be used in production environments to provide email security.  This trial provides the ability to employ all of the industry-leading antivirus engines included with Forefront Security for Exchange Server to protect against the latest malware, as well as advanced antispam capabilities.

Customers who wish to continue using Forefront Security for Exchange Server after the 120-day trial period can purchase it by contacting their reseller.  (If you do not have a reseller, you can locate one here.)

Since Forefront Security for Exchange Server is sold through Volume Licensing, the reseller will:

  • Sign you up for an Open Value volume licensing agreement (if you are not currently an Open Value customer).

  • Allow you to choose whether you want a 1-year or 3-year subscription

  • Ask you whether you want to be billed upfront, quarterly or annually

After your order is placed, you will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to log into the Microsoft Volume Licensing website, where you can retrieve the product key that will activate the full version of the product.

Windows Essentials Business Server

Windows Essentials Business Server 2008 includes a one-year subscription to Forefront Security for Exchange Server to provide antimalware protection for e-mail.  At the end of the one-year subscription, customers who wish to continue using Forefront Security for Exchange Server can renew by contacting their reseller.  (If you do not have a reseller, you can locate one here.)

If you have already purchased Windows Essentials Business Server through an Open Value agreement, you can simply add Forefront Security for Exchange Server to the existing agreement. If you do not have an existing Open Value agreement, your reseller will:

  • Sign you up for an Open Value volume licensing agreement (if you are not currently an Open Value customer).

  • Allow you to choose whether you want a 1-year or 3-year subscription

  • Ask you whether you want to be billed upfront, quarterly or annually

After your order is placed, you will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to log into the Microsoft Volume Licensing website, where you can retrieve product keys, product updates and register for your software assurance benefits.
