Privacy Statement for Microsoft Expression Web 3
Last updated: July 2009
At Microsoft, we’re working hard to protect your privacy, while delivering products
that bring you the performance, power, and convenience that you want in your personal
computing. This privacy statement explains many of the data collection and use practices
of Microsoft Expression Web 3 (“Expression Web”). It does not apply to other online
or offline Microsoft sites, products, or services.
Expression Web is designed to provide you with tools to produce high-quality, standards-based
websites. Please read the information below and also any supplemental information
listed to the left for additional details about Expression Web.
Except as otherwise described in this statement, personal information that you save
in Expression Web is not sent to Microsoft, and information that is sent to Microsoft
is not shared outside of Microsoft and its controlled subsidiaries and affiliates
without your permission.
Collection and Use of Your Information
The information we collect from you will be used by Microsoft and its controlled
subsidiaries and affiliates to enable the features you are using and provide the
service(s) or carry out the transaction(s) you have requested or authorized. It
may also be used to analyze and improve Microsoft products and services; to request
additional information on feedback that you provide about the product or service
that you are using; to provide important notifications regarding the software; to
provide you with advance notice of events; or to tell you about new product releases.
Some personal information you enter may be included in Expression Web metadata files.
This metadata is used by Expression Web to help you collaborate with others on your
websites. Instructions for removing metadata from your websites can be found in
the supplementary information below.
Except as described in this statement, personal information you provide will not
be transferred to third parties without your consent. We occasionally hire other
companies to provide limited services on our behalf, such as packaging, sending
and delivering purchases and other mailings, answering customer questions about
products or services, processing event registration, or performing statistical analysis
of our services. We will only provide those companies the personal information they
need to deliver the service, and they are prohibited from using that information
for any other purpose.
Microsoft may access or disclose information about you, including the content of
your communications, in order to: (a) comply with the law or respond to lawful requests
or legal process; (b) protect the rights or property of Microsoft or our customers,
including the enforcement of our agreements or policies governing your use of the
services; or (c) act on a good faith belief that such access or disclosure is necessary
to protect the personal safety of Microsoft employees, customers, or the public.
We may also disclose personal information as part of a corporate transaction such
as a merger or sale of assets.
Information that is collected by or sent to Microsoft may be stored and processed
in the United States or any other country in which Microsoft or its affiliates,
subsidiaries or service providers maintain facilities. Microsoft abides by the safe
harbor framework as set forth by the U.S. Department of Commerce regarding the collection,
use, and retention of data from the European Union, the European Economic Area,
and Switzerland.
Collection and Use of Information about Your Computer
When you use software with Internet-enabled features, information about your computer
(“standard computer information”) is sent to the Web sites you visit and Web services
you use. Microsoft uses standard computer information to provide you Internet-enabled
services, to help improve our products and services, and for statistical analysis.
Standard computer information typically includes information such as your IP address,
operating system version, browser version, your hardware ID which indicates the
device manufacturer, device name, and version and your regional and language settings.
If a particular feature or service sends information to Microsoft, standard computer
information will be sent as well.
The privacy details for each Expression Web feature, software or service listed
in this privacy statement describe what additional information is collected and
how it is used.
Security
Microsoft is committed to helping protect the security of your personal information.
We use a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect your personal
information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure.
Changes to the Privacy Statement
Microsoft may occasionally update this privacy statement. The "last updated" date
at the top of the privacy statement will be updated with every revision. The revised
privacy statement will be included with a future service pack of this product. We
encourage you to periodically review this privacy statement to be informed of how
Microsoft is protecting your information.

Specific Features
Linking to pictures and other documents
If you choose to create a link to an image, file, data source, or other document
on your hard disk or on a server, the path to that file is saved in your document.
In some cases, the link may include your user name or information about servers
on your network. In the case of a data connection, you can choose to save a user
name or password within the data connection link.
Disk-based websites
Expression Web allows you to create and edit websites in a folder on your local
computer. When you edit web pages from a website folder, metadata such as your logon
name is saved for each file that you edit. This metadata is stored as a hidden folder
inside the website folder. Your logon name is used to display the author information,
such as Created by or Modified by, for files in
the website views and File Properties dialog box. You can choose
to remove the metadata from the website folder on your local computer by clearing
the Maintain the site using hidden metadata files check box in
the Site Settings dialog box. (On the Site menu,
click Site Settings, and then click the General
tab.)
Customer Experience Improvement Program
The Customer Experience Improvement Program (“CEIP”) collects basic information
about your hardware configuration and how you use our software and services to identify
trends and usage patterns. CEIP also collects the type and number of errors you
encounter, software and hardware performance, and the speed of services. We will
not collect your name, address, or other contact information.
We use this information to improve the quality, reliability, and performance of
Microsoft software and services.
If this is a release, CEIP isn’t turned on by default.
To turn CEIP off or on later
- In Expression Web, on the Help menu, click Customer Experience
Improvement Program.
- In the Customer Experience Improvement Program dialog box, do one
of the following:
- To turn CEIP off, select I don’t want to join the program at this time.
- To turn CEIP on, select Join the Expression Web Customer Experience Improvement
Program.
For more information about CEIP, including the CEIP privacy statement, please visit
the
Customer Experience Improvement Program Web Site.
Setup Reports
If Setup Reports is enabled, at the end of the setup process Expression Web will
send over the Internet to Microsoft basic information about the setup such as the
version of Expression Web and any errors encountered during setup. You will not
receive a separate notice before this information is sent.
Microsoft may use the information collected for statistical analysis and to improve
this and other Microsoft products and services. Microsoft will not use the information
to identify or contact you.
Please see your Software License Terms to determine if your version of Expression
Web has Setup Reports enabled.
Microsoft Error Reporting
Error Reporting reports problems you may be having with Expression Web to Microsoft
and to receive information that may help you get around or solve such problems.
Microsoft uses the error reporting data to solve customer problems and improve our
software and services.
Error Reporting collects Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, which are not used to
identify users. It does not intentionally collect anyone’s name, address, email
address, computer name, or any information that could be used to identify you or
contact you. It is possible that such information may be captured in memory or in
the data collected from open files, but Microsoft does not use it to identify or
contact you.
In rare cases, such as problems that are especially difficult to solve, Microsoft
may request additional data, including sections of memory (which may include memory
shared by any or all applications running at the time the problem occurred), some
registry settings, and one or more files from your computer. Your current documents
may also be included. For more details on what information is collected and how
it is used, see the
Error Reporting privacy statement.
