Legal Update
Overview
Over the last decade, Microsoft has resolved numerous legal challenges related to competition policy and antitrust laws.
The company operates under a consent decree in the United States, related to an antitrust settlement reached in November 2001. The consent decree was upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals and went into effect in 2002. The consent decree is supervised by a U.S. District Court Judge.
Microsoft has also reached agreements with authorities in Europe, South Korea, and elsewhere.
In January 2009, European competition authorities issued a Statement of Objections (SO) expressing the preliminary view that Microsoft violates European competition law by including Internet Explorer with Windows. The company will be reviewing the SO in detail and subsequently responding. Microsoft is committed to conducting its business in full compliance with European law.
