LEAD STORY: EUROPEAN SANCTIONS STAND FOR NOW
Last month Judge Bo Vesterdorf, president of the European Court of First Instance, rejected Microsoft’s request to suspend sanctions during the course of the company’s appeal against European antitrust regulators. This is just one step in a lengthy appeals process, but Microsoft is now complying with the imposed sanctions. Most notably, Microsoft is mandated to offer a version of Windows in Europe with media-playing functions stripped out of the operating system. Brad Smith, Microsoft general counsel and senior vice president, noted however that the ruling on interim measures left the company “ample room…to press forward with optimism.”

POLICY NEWS: NEW LAW AIMS TO STOP SOFTWARE COUNTERFEITERS
On December 23, President Bush signed into law the Anti-Counterfeiting Amendments Act (H.R. 3632). This law specifically prohibits trafficking in software with counterfeit labels, packaging or authentication documents. “This new law will be a critical part of the overall effort to address software counterfeiting in this country,” said Jack Krumholtz, associate general counsel and managing director for Microsoft. “The law also will be a tool in the broader fight to protect intellectual property, which fuels innovation and stimulates economic growth.”

MICROSOFT NEWS: ANTI-SPYWARE SOFTWARE ADDED TO SECURITY INITIATIVE
Spyware comes in many forms, including nuisance pop-up ads, tracking software and even keystroke loggers. The best way to fight this malicious technology is with better technology. On December 16, Microsoft announced that it purchased GIANT Company Software Inc., a top developer of anti-spyware and Internet security products. This acquisition lends additional strength to Microsoft’s large-scale security effort. Microsoft is now making a test version of Windows AntiSpyware, which incorporates GIANT technology, available free to Windows 2000 and XP users.

SECURITY NEWS: GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY JOIN FORCES TO FIGHT PHISHING SCAMS
Last month, leading technology companies and government agencies jointly launched Digital PhishNet, an initiative aimed at identifying and stopping those who participate in phishing scams. These online scams use email and fraudulent Web sites to bait computer users into providing valuable personal information, like bank account and credit card numbers. Microsoft, AOL, EarthLink, VeriSign and several banks are working with the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Federal Trade Commission to track down phishing fraudsters and bring them to justice.
