NEW INDUSTRY PROGRAM FIGHTS PHISHING SCAMS
EFFORT WILL BLOCK SPOOFED WEB SITES

LEAD STORY: NEW ANTI-PHISHING SERVICE HELPS BUSINESSES PROTECT CONSUMERS
Last month, the Phish Report Network launched a service that enables businesses to work together to shut down phishing scams. This form of online crime uses fraudulent email and Web sites to trick computer users into divulging personal information like credit card and bank account numbers. Founded by Microsoft, eBay and WholeSecurity, this service aims to block access to phishing sites before they have a chance to rip off consumers. This program complements the work of the Digital PhishNet (reported on in the FINFlash Update in January), which focuses on law enforcement efforts to stop phishing.

POLICY UPDATE: CLASS ACTION LEGAL REFORM BECOMES LAW
FIN members have communicated with their elected officials about the need for class action legal reform. Last month, President Bush signed into law legislation that strengthens our nation’s class action legal system in ways that help businesses and consumers.

SECURITY NEWS: BILL GATES HIGHLIGHTS NEW SECURITY TECHNOLOGY
At February’s RSA Conference, one of the technology industry’s leading security conferences, Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates delivered a keynote address that highlighted company efforts to protect consumers and businesses from security threats. The speech touched on anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-spam technologies. Later this month, the FIN plans to launch a special newsletter series, the FIN Policy Focus. Each issue will examine a specific area of technology or policy debate. The first issue will cover spyware and the efforts to stop this malicious form of software. Look for the FIN Policy Focus in your mailbox soon.

NTERNATIONAL NEWS: SENATE WEIGHS RATIFYING CYBERCRIME CONVENTION
The U.S. Senate is considering ratifying the Council of Europe’s Convention on Cyber Crimes (the “Cybercrime Convention”). This treaty will enable greater international cooperation in the fight against cybercrime without imposing new restrictions or requirements on U.S. businesses and consumers. Stay tuned for more news on this treaty from the FIN.

ANTI-SPAM NEWS: MICROSOFT AND PFIZER TEAM UP TO FIGHT SPAM
Last month, Microsoft and pharmaceutical company Pfizer filed lawsuits against spam rings that are promoting the sale of illegal knock-offs of Viagra. The unsolicited email marketing of fraudulent Viagra is illegal.

TECH TIP: HELP KIDS LEARN ABOUT ONLINE SAFETY
Last month, Microsoft and several partners launched Web Watchers, an online campaign that educates teachers, parents and kids in grades 3-8 about Internet security. At the Web Watchers site, you can view a four-minute overview that highlights steps you can take to secure your computer. You can also vote for your favorite school.
