LEAD STORY: MICROSOFT AGREES TO MODIFY DESKTOP SEARCH ON WINDOWS VISTA
On June 19, the U.S. Department of Justice, Microsoft and participating state attorneys general filed their regularly scheduled joint status report concerning Microsoft’s compliance with the settlement terms of the U.S. antitrust case. In the report, all parties agreed that Microsoft is appropriately responding to a complaint filed by Google that Windows Vista desktop search had anticompetitive features. Microsoft does not believe that this operating system feature violated the settlement, but the company agreed to make modifications that will be released later this year with Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Google attempted to intervene with an additional legal filing, but at a June 26 status hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said, “The plaintiffs, as far as I'm concerned, stand in the shoes of the consumer…. Google is not a party in this case." Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith said, "We’re pleased we were able to reach an agreement with all the states and the Justice Department that addresses their concerns so that everyone can move forward."

INTEROP NEWS: TWO LINUX DISTRIBUTORS AND MICROSOFT FORGE ALLIANCES
In June, Microsoft announced that it would collaborate with Linux distributors Xandros and Linspire. Similar to the groundbreaking agreement forged with Novell last November, these alliances foster innovation and interoperability, and enable Xandros and Linspire to extend patent protection to their customers. “It certainly made sense to collaborate with Microsoft, one of the most important partners in the PC ecosystem,” said Linspire CEO Kevin Carmony.

INNOVATION NEWS: MICROSOFT SHARES SOURCE CODE FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH
On June 13, Microsoft made source code freely available for technology tools used in vaccine research. The company hopes that medical researchers around the world will draw on these software tools to speed AIDS vaccine research. “The medical research tools developed by Microsoft prove that we can make more progress in the battle against HIV when experts in various fields pool their resources and work together,” said Dr. James Mullins, professor of Microbiology at the University of Washington. “Our work with Microsoft Research to combine biological and computer sciences has already been very productive in moving our vaccine design efforts forward.”

Noting that the U.S. has 35,000,000 school-age kids with Internet access, the Senate resolution calls on citizens and organizations to raise awareness about online safety. You can learn more about online safety at staysafe.org, a non-commercial site sponsored by Microsoft, with participation by American Academy of Pediatrics and other organizations.
