COLLABORATION THREATENS COMPETITION AND INNOVATION
In this issue of the FINFlash Update...
LEAD STORY: CONGRESS CASTS A CRITICAL EYE ON YAHOO-GOOGLE ALLIANCE
On July 15, members of the U.S. House and Senate held hearings on the Yahoo-Google alliance, which will provide Google with an even greater super-majority market share in search advertising. In a dramatic moment at the hearing, Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith said, “If one company -- Google -- controls up to 90 percent of online search advertising it will have a complete picture of your online activities. If that happens, Congress won’t need to enact a federal privacy policy, we will already have a national privacy policy -- Google’s privacy policy.” Several lawmakers, including Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL), Sen. Herb Kohl (D-WI), Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA), Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), and others, have voiced strong concerns that the Yahoo-Google deal will hurt competition on the Internet. The U.S. Department of Justice and the offices of several states attorneys general are also reviewing the deal to see if it violates antitrust law.
