The dust is still settling on the historic 2008 election, and President-elect Barack Obama has a full plate of critical issues to address, including the economy and foreign policy. Throughout his campaign, he has supported stronger education in science and math, broadband penetration, and other policies that favor technology and innovation. While technology may not be at the forefront of the President’s agenda, expect to see technology policy emphasized as a way to grow the economy and help address other issues, such as healthcare.

REGULATORY NEWS: GOOGLE DUMPS YAHOO DEAL TO AVOID GOVERNMENT LAWSUIT
On November 5, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Google and Yahoo were abandoning their advertising agreement after being warned that the government would sue to block the companies from implementing the deal. Justice Department officials said the agreement would harm competition given that Google and Yahoo control 90 percent or more of the relevant markets for Internet search advertising and Internet search syndication. The findings were hailed by advertisers, publishers and consumer groups who had voiced concern to law enforcement and policymakers. The agreement was also under investigation by 15 state attorneys general as well as Canadian and European regulators.

MICROSOFT NEWS: AZURE TECHNOLOGIES REPRESENTS NEW ERA IN COMPUTING
At the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in late October, Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie unveiled Windows Azure and the Azure Services Platform. Now being tested by developers, these new technologies significantly expand the possibilities of so-called “cloud computing.” Corporate and individual technology users will be able to seamlessly draw on hosted software and data, providing greater choice and flexibility, and limiting the need to invest in expensive new IT systems and hardware.
