LEAD STORY: ALLIANCE PUTS SPAM SQUARELY IN ITS SIGHTS
In advance of a special summit organized by the Federal Trade Commission, an alliance of 35 companies and organizations including Amazon, Bank of America, Cisco, eBay, Microsoft and many others, shared their anti-spam battle plan with FTC Chairman Deborah Majoras. The plan calls for broad implementation of authentication technologies that will help separate legitimate email from spam.

LEGAL UPDATE: MICROSOFT SETTLES WITH NOVELL AND TRADE GROUP
On November 8, Microsoft announced that it had reached settlements resolving antitrust claims with Novell and the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA). Both Novell and CCIA will withdraw from participation in the European Commission case against Microsoft. The settlement with CCIA brings to a close the historic U.S. antitrust case. CCIA had been the sole remaining challenger to the settlement approved by the U.S. District Court in November 2002. The agreement with Novell, under which Microsoft will pay Novell $536 million, settles all claims with Novell relating to NetWare. As expected, however, Novell filed suit against Microsoft for antitrust claims related to WordPerfect, which Novell owned from June 1994 to March 1996.

MICROSOFT NEWS: STRENGTHENING INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY PROTECTION
In response to growing customer concerns about intellectual property (IP) claims and the need to better manage risk, Microsoft announced earlier this month that it would extend IP indemnification to all end-users of most Microsoft products. Previously Microsoft had only indemnified large corporate customers. Many other, but not all, technology companies also offer IP indemnification to their customers.

PRODUCT NEWS: A BUSY MONTH OF RELEASES
In November, Microsoft launched a test version of its new search site and released Halo 2, a game for the Xbox video game system. Though MSN Search is still under development, you can test this new tool at:

The release of Halo 2 became a widely reported event, and sales of the new game set industry records, reaching $125 million on its first day.
