A Cartoonist Goes to War

He was a young cartoonist living in Greenwich Village when he was drafted into the United States Army Air Force. He learned how to fly P-47s but didn't know how to drive a car. Known for a likeable cheerfulness, George Rarey busied himself in the lulls between fighter missions sketching barracks life and capturing the antics of his fellow fighter pilots in the skies over Europe.

His work became a legacy to his son Damon, who was born in 1944 while Rarey Sr. was stationed in England. When Damon grew up he decided to share his father's joyful spirit with others through a book, Laughter and Tears, A Combat Pilot's Sketchbooks of World War II Squadron Life. Damon's mother, Betty Lou, also shared Rarey's letters with her son for the making of the book and later, for an extraordinary Web site he created in his father's memory. Not only is the site a tribute, but it has come to serve as a link to other World War II veterans and their families.

Damon Rarey generously shared his father's original cartoons and sketches for use in Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator European Series Pilot's Manual.
