Q: In the Readme.txt file included with Combat Flight Simulator
2, there is a reference to updating drivers if I have an AMD CPU, but the link doesn't
take me to a specific file to download for my PC. What update do I need to install?
A.
The update to which the Readme.txt file refers is not specifically for the AMD processor
itself, it is for the chipset used on some motherboards. The chipsets are widely
used with AMD processors, but are by no means limited to AMD processors. These chipsets
have been used with Intel, Cyrix, and AMD processors on motherboards built by a
variety of manufacturers. As such we cannot possibly list all of the systems requiring
this update. The problem is not so much a fault in the design of the chipset or
motherboard as a lack of the necessary drivers to make these motherboards work at
their best. Specifically, the AGP port requires that these drivers be installed
to function optimally. The AGP port will function without them, but under the high
load conditions generated by the intensive graphics within Combat Flight Simulator
2, problems with performance may become apparent. To get the necessary motherboard
drivers, you will need to refer to the support section of your motherboard manufacturer's
Web site.

UPDATING VIDEO DRIVERS FROM MANUFACTURERS
Contact your video card manufacturer and follow the manufacturer's instructions
to get the latest driver. These drivers are often available on the manufacturer's
Web site (see list below) or from a bulletin board (BBS). The driver is usually
available as a PKZip (ZIP) file or a self-extracting executable (EXE) file.
If the manufacturer of your video card includes specific instructions for installing
the driver, follow them. Otherwise, unzip the files into a temporary subdirectory
on your hard disk drive or onto a floppy disk, then follow these instructions:
- Open the Display Properties dialog box by right-clicking on the Windows®
desktop and then clicking Properties
on the popup menu.
- In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings
tab.
- Click Advanced Display Properties.
- Click the Adapter
tab.
- Click Change.
- In the Select Device dialog box, click Have Disk.
- If you have the latest video driver from your video card manufacturer on a disk
or CD-ROM, select the appropriate drive and click OK. Otherwise click Browse.
Go to the temporary subdirectory you created for the video card files and Windows
should select the appropriate file.
- In the Select Device dialog box, choose the driver that matches your video
card, then click OK.
- Click OK
as many times as necessary to accept the changes.
- To restart your computer, click Yes in the System Settings Change
dialog box.
MANUFACTURERS LIST
It's important that you're using the most current video drivers for
your video card. There are currently dozens of video cards available. For your convenience,
we've provided links to the Web sites of many of the current popular card manufacturers.
We try to keep these links up-to-date, but companies do change their Web sites on
occasion.
Note: Because there are so many combinations of hardware and software available,
we've added more graphics settings which can be adjusted to achieve the look and
feel you want. The article Advanced Image
Quality/Performance Settings for Combat Flight Simulator 2
will help you adjust those settings, which will help you create the best CFS2 experience.
Microsoft does not warrant any of the products or drivers offered by these companies.
