"Combine the
historic and strategic elements of Civilization with the real-time decision
making and animations of Warcraft and Command and Conquer, and you have an idea
of what to expect in Age of Empires."
GameSpot, February 1997
While
you might be overwhelmed
by the obvious bonuses in Age of Empires, don't forget to notice the details.
It's not only a different game each time you play. It's a different game,
period. Beautiful graphics, twelve civilizations, a comprehensive technology
tree, dozens of units, randomly generated maps, and a rich soundtrack, add up
to a more complete gaming experience.
Age of Empires sets you within an historical context, not in a purely fictional
world. But of course, if you would rather diverge from the beaten path, Age of
Empires includes a built-in scenario editor so you can create your own
conflicts and scenarios.
Age of Empires also brings you the expanse of the unknown. You have room to
roam -- the maps are large, plenty of room for you, and up to eight other
players, to play in a multiplayer forum.

To study history means submitting to chaos
and nevertheless retaining faith in order and meaning. It is a very serious
task, young man, and possibly a tragic one.
