Chat

Both private chat and in-game voice communication require a headset with microphone.

Private Chat

Games for Windows - LIVE private chat lets you send and accept invitations to chat right from your Guide, much the same way as you'd send or accept a game invite.

A chat is a closed conversation between you and one other person. Your chat partner can be playing the same game you are, but can also be playing a different game-or watching a DVD movie, or listening to music.

To switch between chat participants, use the Private Chat screen.

To start a private chat:

1.     On your PC, start your game. Press the Home key on your keyboard to open the Guide.

2.     Sign in to LIVE.

3.     Select Private Chat and then select an available Chat Channel.

4.     Select or enter a gamertag.

5.     Select Send Invite. The person you invite will have five minutes to accept your invitation, after which the system assumes the person you invited is unavailable and cancels the invite. You can always send another invitation!

If you or another recipient declines a chat invitation, the sender isn't told whether the invitation was declined or it expired.

In-Game Voice Communication

Every Games for Windows - LIVE-enabled game that supports multiplayer gaming also supports in-game voice communication. There's nothing to switch on or activate beyond plugging in your headset.

To enable in-game voice communication:

1.     On your PC, start your game. Press the Home key on your keyboard to open the Guide.

2.     Sign in to LIVE.

3.     Voice communication is enabled by default, if it is disabled follow these steps:

o    In the Guide, select your gamer card.

o    From the Gamer Profile screen, select Account Management. When asked to open a browser window, select Yes.

o    Select Privacy Settings and make sure either Everyone or Friends Only is checked.
Note - To enable voice communications for a child account, see Family Settings [KB 977700].

4.     Plug in your headset.
Use your headset with a microphone or any compatible audio device that has a microphone and speaker. Voice communication options are available under Settings in the Guide home menu.
