Disruptive Players

One of the things we strive to do with Games for Windows - LIVE is to give you a great place to play where everyone can have fun as part of a community. Part of living in any community is making sure that every member follows the rules in terms of what is appropriate behavior.

What's Considered Bad Behavior?
We're not talking about an occasional four-letter word. We're talking about the people who scream, make racially derogatory comments, or are so obnoxious that they detract from the fun for everyone else.

Check out the Code of Conduct on Xbox.com for examples of the sorts of things that aren't OK-for instance, choosing a gamertag or nickname that's offensive, being verbally abusive, or using constant profanity during in-game voice communication.

Dealing with disruptive players

The Games for Windows - LIVE and the Xbox LIVE community is managed by its members (you), which means you're empowered to let us know when someone you play with makes the experience not fun. This way, we can take action to help that person understand the error of their ways and prevent that kind of behavior in the future.

Mute the player
This is your most effective tool. If you don't want to hear them, turn them off!

  • To do this, select their gamertag from the Players list, and then select the Mute option.

Avoid the player
The player will become an avoided player which will decrease your chances of playing together in the future.

To avoid a player, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Guide or Home button.
  2. When the Guide pops up, select Players.
  3. Select the player about whom you want to submit a player review.
  4. Select Submit Player Review.
  5. Select Avoid this Player.
  6. Select one of the following general reasons why you want to avoid the player:
    • Communication
    • Game Behavior
    • Player Skill
  7. Select one of the following specific reasons why you want to avoid the player that is based on the general reason that you selected in the previous step:
    • Communication: Trash-talking, Bothersome Language, Disruptive Voice
    • Game Behavior: Overly Aggressive, Unsporting Conduct, Quits Early
    • Playing Skill: Lacking Skill, Too Good, Unfamiliar With Game
  8. After you submit a player review, you return to the Gamer Profile screen.

File a complaint
You can file a complaint against another player if you feel that the other player has violated the LIVE Code of Conduct.

Typically, you file a complaint from the Guide. However, if the game has a complaint option, you can also file a complaint directly from the game in between game sessions.

Note: The complaint option may not be available in all games. If a specific game does not have the complaint option, you must file a complaint from the Guide.

To file a complaint from the Guide, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Guide or Home button.
  2. Select Players.
  3. Select the player about whom you want to file a complaint.
  4. Select File a Complaint.
  5. Select one of the following general reasons for filing the complaint:
    • Profile and Content
    • Communications
    • Tampering
  6. Select the specific reason that is based on the general reason that you selected in the previous step:
    • Profile and Content: Gamertag, Motto, Player Content
    • Communications: Text Message, Voice Mail, Voice Chat, In-Game
    • Tampering: Feedback Tampering, System Tampering, Cheating
  7. On the Confirm Complaint screen, select File Complaint. If you decide not to file a complaint, select Don't File to quit.

Note
The Games for Windows - LIVE feedback system has a built-in trust rating that will start to ignore "avoid" reviews when a reviewer is identified as abusing the system. This will happen if you have a high ratio of negative feedback to the number of players you've played against.

If the LIVE service believes you are abusing the feedback system, you will be unable to submit negative reviews-the notification will pop up but the review won't stick.

CONTACT LAW ENFORCEMENT
If you feel that you are in danger, contact law enforcement immediately. We will work with law enforcement directly to investigate.
