A few basic rules apply to almost any game played in pursuit of any of the basic
strategies:

- Don’t build your Lightning Rods too close together; one blast from enemy artillery
units can crumple them and cut your Electricity gather rate severely.

- Don’t fight a battle you can’t win. Run away.
- Sometimes an expansion isn’t worth fighting for. Don’t pour several thousand resources
into defending one expansion from attack. The most you have to lose if you don’t
defend it is your Workshop (250 Coal). You can usually run your Henchmen away, or
into nearby water to escape the attacking force.
You may be able to wait until it is convenient for you to retake the expansion.
Sometimes people don’t guard expansions so your opponent may attack it, scare you
away and then move on, at which point you can go back over, build a new Workshop
and resume gathering at a cost of only 250. This could end up costing far less than
a losing attempt to defend the expansion.
- Use speed to your advantage (if you have the advantage) in combat. If your direct
range is faster than their melee units, then run whatever unit they're attacking
around in circles until they switch to attack the next unit. Then repeat. You can
kill a lot of melee units this way if you can micromanage it. This can be done with
melee units too! If yours are faster than your opponent’s, pull yours back once
in a while to make enemy units reacquire their targets and get positioned; opposing
forces will take longer to do this than yours and it will result in free hits for
your units.
- When rushing, use your forward builder Henchmen to attack with your rush force.
- Be careful about which types of units you mix in your army; some are difficult to
micromanage. For example, micromanaging an army comprised of artillery and melee
units can be very tricky because the units you want to attack with your melee will
end up getting pounded by your own artillery. Friendly fire will hurt your own melee
units if they attack the same unit.

- Place four tiles of Bramble Fence (one on each side) around a Soundbeam Tower. This
makes it pretty tough for lower rank units (rush units) to take out your towers.

- On some maps you can use a Gyrocopter to build a Creature Chamber inside an enemy
base (even behind the wall). Remain out of sight, then mass up a surprise attack
when your foe’s army is away. Especially if you have the Barrier Destroy ability,
you can do a lot of damage before the main enemy force comes back to defend.
- If your opponent builds a Creature Chamber close to the front, and you spot it early
enough, use a couple Henchmen to fence it in. This will prevent your foe from being
able to deploy units from it.
- Sell any buildings you are no longer using: Workshops at depleted Coal mines, Lightning
Rods when you have massive amounts of Electricity built up, Creature Chambers you
can no longer afford to produce out of, research buildings you are finished researching
out of, etc.
- Use camouflage units to raid opponents’ expansions. Wait for the best opportunities
to attack; you want your opponent to be too busy to notice you killing his Hench.
It’s best to raid while you are in a big battle with your adversary’s main forces.
